High on Fire and Overkill? That is the definition of stupidity.

Overkill, certainly. White Devil Armoury was their best album since the early '90s IMO.

High On Fire have always been so so "standard fare" to these ears.

Oh...and Corrosion Of Conformity.

No.

Devin Townsend's hit and miss, and it's been a while since anything he's released has interested me, but I'm in the minority here.

Townsend doesn't qualify because he was a genuine innovator in his prime and has his own style/sound.

Amorphis have become one of those bands but they didnt start that way. Same with The Haunted.

Nah, I've never got the love for The Haunted, especially from their first album. I'll add another:

Ghost

So you think Haunted's debut was workmanlike then? If so, thats a very strange opinion to hold, even for one that doesn't like them.

I've tried, but never got right through it.

Devil Driver is another for this list.

Nah! Devil Driver as just shit. The Haunted's debut is awesome. The rest of their output falls into this thread, though.

I'm having a hard time of what 'ordinary competence' pertains to.

Is it just a stretch of middling albums from a once great/innovative artist? Or is a band that has never even managed to attain even 4 fist status, but potentially without having something completely naff, like say, Celtic Frost going from their seminal early albums to 'Cold Lake'?

I guess I have a hard time seeing Corrosion of Conformity or Devin Townsend's various projects being in the discussion. Something like Devil Driver is exactly what I'd expect though - really generic but inoffensive (unless you want to deduct points for having an ex-nu metal vocalist jumping onto the next wagon) and very by-the-numbers.

It was originally meant for bands that have been around for 15+ years but have never come close to achieving mastery or even releasing a 4 fister.

Bands that were once interesting and now workmanlike don't really belong in this thread in my view, especially Amorphis who have released some very well regarded albums in the past.

But doesn't that make it very subjective? This would be at odds with the "competence" in the title, which isn't usually subjective.

I would suggest if a band has been around for 15+ years and still touring and/or releasing albums, they must be doing something right/well, even if it isn't to your taste.

I would further suggest that bands of "ordinary competence" struggle to get past the 2nd or 3rd albums, and therefore don't hang around for long.

I may be taking it too literally, though.

So basically take a look at a Wacken line-up poster and most of your answer are there?

I would say that's the competence part.
