I saw them play in Cork in the mid-'90s, not bad but their albums never did it for me.

I quite enjoy them. Nothing that's going to tax yer brain too much, more just a bit of DM noise in the background...

I have been in the mood for atonal blasting DM. Nile, hate eternal, origin etc. basically the more it blends into a wall of noise the better

Someone gave me a copy of the Vader album 'Impressions in Blood' and I always turn to it when I fancy this^ sort of thing. The generic-ness of it adds to the fun. I like Piotr's voice on that album too, he can't quite manage a death metal growl and does this sort of weird straining, groaning voice.

Apart from the odd track here and there, I never have actually. I know not all their material sounds like that though. I saw them live (headlining above Repulsion!!) and was pretty bored to be honest.

3. Nile
4. Carcass
5. Morbid Angel
6. Cannibal Corpse
7. Deicide

9. Akercocke
10. Cynic

Top 20 Albums
1. Death - Leprosy
2. Death - Symbolic
3. Opeth - Blackwater Park
4. Death - Spiritual Healing
5. Carcass - Necroticism
6. Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
7. Deicide - Deicide
8. Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
9. Cynic - Focus
10. Opeth - Still Life
11. Obituary - Cause of Death

Opeth are a tricky inclusion as they progressed into a different type of band. Hence the albums I chose are more of a straight up Death Metal persuasion.

I know we've discussed this before, but still...yes Cynic was on Raodrunner and therefore got lumped into the DM genre at the time, but really, listening to it now, Focus would never be classified as DM surely?

Well, this thread has descended into the same old shit rather quickly.

I'm putting my post about Morbid Angel in the random music thread as it will reach a wider audience...

I think that was my fault, but I meant list 5 bands that should be checked out (partly by me, as I only own a couple of death metal bands' stuff) rather than lists of favourite records.

Like, for example, with black metal there are some seminal Norwegian bands which should be given a go, such as Mayhem, Burzum, Emperor, etc. That's what I meant, but for death metal.

Then there's Behemoth. I've never checked them out, and they seem to get no respect on this forum. Thing is, they're talked about all over the net, they headline tours, and seem to be pretty popular.

Nice one, cheers Sol.

I know Carcass and Entombed already, but will listen to the rest tonight when the lass is out.

Wiki says this:
Quote:
Possessed[8] and Death,[9][10][11] along with bands such as Obituary, Carcass, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel are often considered pioneers of the genre.

Most of which you posted, so I shall give them all a go.

Yeah, you could add

Possessed: Seven Churches
Deicide: s/t (not my favourite of theirs but it's considered their definitive album)
Grave: You'll Never See
Cannibal Corpse: Eaten Back To Life

The deaf cunts on here will also suggest Autopsy: Severed Survival or Mental Funeral, but they're shit so don't bother.

Cannibal and Deicide are the two, other than Carcass, that I know the best. Cheers again!

If the likes of some of the melodeath mewlers such as Archenemy(now) and Soilwork can be counted as DM, then I'm sure Cynic would too.

Especially now. The definition of what can and can't be DM is wider than it was before.

Would you put Atheist in the same camp? I know they came from a thrash background but they were in similar territory at one stage.

It was only due to the fact that the Cynic members played in other bands (Death, Atheist, Pestilence) and recorded at Morrisound really. They were almost like a SCENE APPROVED NON STRAIGHT UP DEATH METAL BAND THAT YOU WERE ALLOWED TO GET INTO BECAUSE THE MEMBERS KNEW OTHER BANDS.

True. But they were also:

1. Death Metal
2. Ace.

I like Traced In Air too. The EP that followed TIA was fucking shit though!

Never did get around to listening to the EP.

If I remember, I made Traced in Air my favourite album of that year.
It was either that or AC/DC anyway.

Listening now to Sol's recommendations so I can be cool and join in and stuff...

Death and Dismember are the two bands that have stood out so far that I think I'll listen to more of.
