The CDs, at any rate...

One of the best metal albums of the early 90s. Fact!

Eh, yeah. Is anyone disputing it being a metal album?

It's certainly great, and has aged better than the rest of their early output IMO.

They were lumped in with the Grunge/Alt lot, which of course they were, but Cornell's voice owed more to Ronnie James Dio than any of the usual influences associated with those genres. Jesus Christ Pose is pure fucking metal. No question.

'Grunge' was nonsense though, a made up label vaguely associated with the Seattle bands (and a few others), none of which sounded alike. Soundgarden are metal, of course. Most of them are/were.

Same as Nu Metal to a point. A load of bands, some of whom sounded fuck all alike but who wore similar looking clothes, all lumped in together because they appeared around the same time.

Punk was just as much of an influence on Grunge as metal tbf.

Don't go full retard Spiny. There definitely was a nu-metal sound. The fact that the label was often not used precisely does not mean it didn't exist.

There was also an alternative rock sound. Whether it was 'grunge' or not is debatable, but there are certain chord progressions and vocal styles that are synonymous with early 90's American rock.

What the grunge bands shared in that era was a kind of 'downer' vibe that was not common at all in the 80's, so the label kind of stuck.

Firstly I said "to a point", secondly, I said "some of whom" and thirdly, are you seriously telling me that Slipknot sounded like Crazy Town, System of a Down sounded like Alien Ant Farm, and Korn sounded like Disturbed?

Yeah, okay.

Early Slipknot, Korn and Disturbed albums had those low tuned riffs that hugged the 6th string. They all evolved beyond that sound but in 99/2000 they were identifiable as nu-metal. SOAD were always outliers and Crazy Town were pop/rock

Crazy Town and SOAD were regularly classed as Nu Metal. Even now on TV, they both still feature heavily in Nu Metal themed shows.

SOAD were classified as nu-metal at first but they were also referred to as post-nu metal. In reality they had more in common (spiritually, and sometimes musically) with FNM and bands like The Dead Kennedys than Korn, but they were lumped in the nu-metal category largely as a result of timing.

Disturbed are an interesting case because there was always a cock rock influence present in their sound that critics rarely picked up on. They didn't really spread their wings until the late 00s, which led to a total reassessment of their style and sound. Donergan is an old school metalhead and I suspect that the early nu-metal stuff was just them trying to fit in and become famous.

Which goes back to what I said originally.

I can hear cock rock in Disturbed occasionally, but I can also hear Priest, Dio, and Maiden, but that's most probably just down to Draiman's voice.

Those influences are less evident on the first few Disturbed records where he often sounds more like an 80s pop singer trying to sing metal, but I get your point.

Draiman was not a metalhead. His influences were 80s pop and things like that and it shows. I recall seeing a top ten albums list from him in Metal Hammer that had no metal albums in the early 00s.

I knew he liked his '80s pop but I just figured he was into both. His voice just sounds tailor made for metal.
