Let's all be friends and agree that the worst New York Death Metal band to ever record an album is Mortician.

When Hacked Up For Barbecue came out I was young and stupid enough to think that because Greg Whalen had given it a rave review in Tez it had to be good, and gave it far more time than it deserved. I genuinely never understood how they got signed to Relapse at a time when that label had really rigorous quality control and an otherwise flawless roster - Will Rahmer must have got pictures of the label bosses fucking a pony, or something.

I wish I had the patience to bother to do that, as it's a good idea.

Not so much download as my mate surprised me with a carrier bag of album to borrow last night, so

Burial Invocation - Rituals of the Grotesque
Revolting - Dreadful Pleasures
Nihilist - Nihilist (1987-1989)
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten / Pierced from Within

plus 2 I already have in
Nirvana 2002 - Recordings 89-91
At The Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours

And then he chucked in the Swedish Death Metal Book.

All pretty groovy.

I don't know, he's only lending it to me. But he got it when it came out.

They almost seemed 'cool' back in the day if you were into horror, and they were one of the first DM bands to use samples i think, and they used them well, but yeah, they weren't much cop really; an aesthetic creation, no more, no less. Maybe they are terrible now, who knows, i haven't heard them in years. and they haven't released an album in a decade. but they didn't strike me as being especially terrible at the time, just ordinary.

I think the appeal stemmed from the 'rawness' of the sound and primitive nature of the arrangements etc, but the whole 'buckets of blood' vibe they were aiming for wasn't unnerving in the slightest. The whole Relapse deal made sense though when you consider that Exhumed were signed two or so years later; they had a penchant for goregrind, or gore themed death metal. But to me that whole style was kind of dated by 1996 anyway.

They didn't use samples well. Two minutes of dialogue/spooky noises cut straight from a film followed by one minute of music is not a good use of sample. HUFB would have been half as long at most if you'd have cut the samples out.

They picked them well though i think.

I haven't listened to them since 1996, but they did have a gimmick that worked for a short period of time.

Get a bigger HDD, thief!

I've a 1Tb hard drive, just a 160 (147.9 in reality) Gb Ipod, and I can't be bothered unticking all the stuff I don't want to put on the ipod, so it I just delete it, but keep it on the hard drive iin case I want it at a later date.

I currently have an 8gb mp3 player where the jack is going.

I have all my music on the new pc in 320kbps but I'm ripping them all as .flac now as I have a 2TB HDD.

The 320kbps will be kept for the mp3 player I'll hopefully buy in the future and .flac is for listening on the pc.

What program do you use for flac Morf? Is Apple lossless or Windows media lossless wav all the same as flac.
If you're listening to lossless on a pc will you be using high end speakers or what?
Also a stupid question but do you need a headphone amp with an mp3 player?
Also I remember Was talking about vbr. When you rip a cd should you select vbr?

I use 320kbps for the ipod and sometimes lossless for PC. I honestly don't think 320 is bad quality through a decent set of headphones. I've heard really shitty 90 something kbps mp3s and I can spot the difference there but otherwise it's either very good to cd quality.

192 kbps or higher is fine.

I find I can tell the difference between 192 and 320, but for the equipment I use, I doubt I'm going to see a massive difference between 320 and higher. So I'm content with 320 for now. Though certainly in the car the difference in depth I feel is noticeable between an mp3 cd and an actual CD.

So you do all your home listening on headphones Morf? Isn't that terrifying if someone sneaks up on you from behind?

I listen loud enough that I can't hear the lawnmower or the hoover. Probably too loud but I think my hearing is just fine.

Is their a recommended loudness for every album? Because surely to combat dBA-weighting/the Fletcher Munson Curve, the album has been mixed in a specific way, but if you listen to it quiet your perception of the mix, certainly in the low end, is very different to listening to it loud. I know that's why the Cure's Disintegration says "This album was mixed to be played loud, so turn it up!" but does that mean you the ideal volume is the same as the producer/mixing engineers monitor speakers?

I don't know why it's not something I've never wondered before.
