Ahh, Wretch, I just wasn't into this type of thing when the Black Album came out. The 'thrash' bands I favoured were the heavier bands (Slayer, Possessed, Voivod, Nasty Savage, CF, Dark Angel, Sacrifice etc.) and I'd been into the whole tape trading scene since 87 so I was very much steeped in the whole DM scene by then. Regardless of all that shit, I still hate that fucking record. Hard to believe it's the same band who recorded RTL...(technically, it isn't, I suppose)

Well given I was 13 at the time, and it was the big thing, I was going to be hearing it, even if it didn't impress me like the earlier albums. My own tastes were becoming more extreme at the time I suppose, but I still would have said Maiden and Motorhead were more important than anyone really. Not much has changed in that regard I suppose.

Don't get me wrong, I nearly shat me bags when I first heard Kill Em All. Doubly so for Ride The Lightning (which would still figure in my Top 10). I gradually gave less and less of a fuck about 'tallica as the years marched on. I honestly see nothing in them now that reminds me of the band I loved back in 84.

I feel the same, but in the early 90's I still had some faith, and wanting to see them live was still a big thing for me so there was that.

Once the Load thing came along though, it was like the ultimate betrayal, bad enough that death metal bands were making rubbish like 'Black Faith', and Donington had Everclear and Cecil, now fucking Metallica were a bunch of eyeliner wearing knobheads, playing gutless stadium rock for fucking knuckle dragging morons, complete with hot rod t shirts. And their album covers were pictures of some eejits man muck.

Spunk isn't what you want on a record cover.

I like Load and ReLoad personally. More than the Black Album. There's a confessional, introspective vibe on those records that I really enjoy.

Plus The Outlaw Torn is a fucking great song whichever way you slice it.

The Load albums are none of my business. It makes no sense at all to me to consider it a "betrayal" - they don't owe me or anyone else anything, and their good albums are no less good for it - but I've got no interest in listening to it.

Its funny, the first 3 songs that are eliminated so far are not so bad! I'm going for Tread.

Don't you think the band "bundled them together" with the names, Vibe?

Tread, it's not shitter than Never, Holier or Struggle but is jingoistic, redneck and annoying.

Fuck you Hetfield, you ubercunt.

Re: the Loads - From what I can tell both albums were written at roughly the same time, one lot of songs went on one and then the next lot on another.

ReLoad is fine I think.

They are equally average and dull.

Is 'Of Wolf and Man' the one that goes 'back to the meaning, back to the meaning, of life'? If so that is complete and utter bollocks.

never understood the appeal of that one.

Between 1995-2003, Metallica were in creative freefall. 'Death Magnetic' reversed the downward trend somewhat, but only because it wasn't completely terrible. 'Lulu', on the other hand, was an abomination.

I do, but I think they're clueless and all. :)

Fair point.

Load is a pretty good album. It's a shitty Metallica album, sure, but in and of itself it's fine.

Reload, on the other hand, was the shittest thing they'd ever done. Right until St. Inker came out, anyway.

The God That Failed lyrics are absolutely fine. That or My Friend Of Misery to win.

Don't Tread is my vote. Weak song with a riff that's a bit of a filler for me. I agree with Chantler for the winners.

Not that it was a personal betrayal or anything, but more that post grunge and the beginning of nu - metal, the only thing the biggest metal band in the world could offer was mediocrity, and an attempt to further distance themselves from metal itself was like a slap in the fucking face really. Aside from the music, they just came across as naff and deluded, Hetfield was barely a step up from Billy Ray Cyrus, Ulrich was into the cult of "cool", Newsted was a glorified session musician, and Hammett looked like Dave Navarro with AIDS.

Don't care what they were into or looked like, there are loads of great riffs on the Load albums, they were forces for good in the mainstream mid-90s rock scene. Braver to invite ridicule and take risks than stagnate and just do what's expected of you like the majority of their thrash contemporaries.
