Not sure about The Puppet Master being an 'essential' album from MF/KD. It's a good album, but doesn't compare to those earlier releases. I would replace it with 'The Eye' on that list; a far better album.

I need to re-listen to Fatal Portrait - I got that album at the same time as Abigail so it got very neglected...

Puppermaster is quality Diamond, but it's second tier.

Second tier Diamond is still pretty great though

The eye is way better than the puppet master.

Huge KD fan, among my top 5 artists ever.

I recommend anything released between 1982 and 1994.

I also recommend to listen to the concept albums (Abigail through The Eye) with the lyrics in front of you, preferably from the original insert/booklet (esp. in the case of Abigail and "Them" - which is my second favorite album ever) because the story and the music REALLY go together, my first experience of "Them" in a young age was positively sensational. Also, the vocals will make a lot more sense in the context of the story.

Nuns Have No Fun: 10/10
Melissa: 10/10
Don't Break the Oath: 10/10
Fatal Portrait: 10/10
Abigail: 11/10
"Them": 11/10
Conspiracy: 9.5/10
The Eye: 10/10 (some people like this album less than the previous ones but they are wrong: Behind These Walls proves them wrong!)
In the Shadows: 9/10
Time: 8.5/10

I have to admit that I get as far as the vocals and then can't take it seriously any more, even though I'm enjoying the music.

I've just tried listening to Abigail, following reading some posts on here, with the same result.

It's Vic remember. If he's a fan of something, he's a huge fan. :D

I can stomach an 8.5/10 for the poor souls who did not realize the monumental moment of hearing Mercyful Fate again. :P

Is That You Melissa? is an 11/10 song too. Vocal lines and the last solo are GODLY.

My top 5 artists:
Metallica (80s)
Death
Kai Hansen (Helloween years/Gamma Ray)
King Diamond (MF/KD)
Slayer (up to Decade of Aggression)

Mustaine and Megadeth would make #6.

In The Shadows is a really good album, but I wouldn't give it more than a 4/5.

I've said it before and I"ll say it again: anyone that prefers 9 to In The Shadows (like the old Tez staff) does not get what Mercyful Fate are truly about.

People actually think this? In the Shadows is 4/5, 9 is 2.5/5, maximum 3/5.

Alright I've just listened to 'Abigail' right through. I kept an open mind and I can understand *edit because i hit post before I was done*
why many people would enjoy this. Not sure I'll ever be a huge fan but I can see something compelling - makes me wonder what he'd be like live. Someone said he's excellent.

I will listen to 'Them' and report back.

Additionally, I see there is 'Abigail II - The Revenge'. Does anyone rate it? I'm curious now I've listened to 'Abigail'.

Abigail 2 is very divisive. I like it a lot, but the production isn't that good and the songs aren't that memorable, yet the album flows really well. It is a relatively smooth ride.

If you're interested in the story of Abigail, the sequel album may interest you. It's definitely not a bad album, but like Stat said, the production is a little lacking and only some of the songs stick with you in the end; the opening track and 'Spirits' being among the best. There are a few tiers of quality when it comes to K/D; bottom of the barrel being albums like Voodoo and House of God, middle tier being albums like The Puppet Master and Abigail II and the top tier albums from the 80s like Abigail, Them, etc. Abigail II is safely in the 'listenable & enjoyable' category along with Give Me Your Soul and The Puppet Master. I would recommend that you give Voodoo, House of God and The Graveyard a wide berth. You should probably do the same with Spider's Lullaby, but that album seems to be a little polarising for K/D fans.

I agree with all of that except for The Spider's Lullabye, which I think is not only one of his better albums of the last 25 years, it also features some very interesting vocal work. It was one of the last albums where he layered his vocals in a creative way.

Voodoo gets off to a strong start then it goes south quickly, no pun intended! House of God is pretty mediocre and so is The Graveyard, but both of them have their moments. They aren't terrible albums though, just weak.

I'd say that overall King Diamond has been quite consistent since the mid 90's, but I'd probably only give two albums a 4/5. The rest are 3's to 3.5's.
