I've basically just been listening to this in work all week.

Both great classic albums. I was never able to get into System of a Down though.

Coroner have so many great albums that it is easy to neglect their debut full length. The following three just refine all the great aspects of RIP.

^^I've been listening to early Malmsteen myself lately. He was pretty much useless after Fire and Ice imo, but there was definitely something special about his early work. His style is definitely a product of its time, but there was a certain 'magic' to it that his imitators never managed to replicate.

^^Youthanasia is state of the art pop metal. Sounds better now than it did in 1994, and i liked it a lot then too. Mustaine was really pushing his vocals on it, and some of his melodies are excellent. THe sound is great too. It's clean and heavy and has a bit more grit than Countdown, which was far too sterile for its own good. Is it a better album than Countdown? I don't know, depends on my mood. It certainly sounds better, but CTD has some of their most truly definitive songs, whereas Youthanasia only has a few of them. It was probably the last Megadeth album to really work as a proper album with a distinct identity though.

As for Firepower, that album has staying power. Definitely not just a good album to spin on its first month of release. I'm surprised how often I've returned to it since it came out. It's probably too long, but overall I'm damn pleased with it.

I’d place “Youthanasia” right in the middle of the Megadeth back catalogue as far as quality goes. It’s a passable heavy metal album that sounds good production-wise but is lacking in highlights & includes a bit too much filler for my liking. It was a step down from “Countdown To Extinction” which has a lot more highlights & half the filler but still doesn’t sit amongst the top tier Megadeth records.

It’s probably slightly below Countdown... for me, but I think it’s still a really great example of a streamlined metal album. Even though the song quality maybe dips towards the end, the melodies and hooks are still strong enough for me to enjoy aback-to-front listen.
