As much as Maiden bored me from the late 80's onward, there's no denying Bruce was irreplaceable. So no matter who would have replaced him this conversation would probably still be taking place.

I was trying the Stat_Rad edit there. :D

Those programmed drugs eh? ;)

They wouldn't let a kraut sing for Maiden, even if he had the voice!

Weirdly, I read that Doogie White from Rainbow/Michael Schenker tried out for the job and got a second call back, seems curious. He is a decent enough singer, but he wouldn't suit, and always sounded very like Biff Byford, which would be a weird mix.

The problem with Blaze is that even if he was singing as well on the Maiden records as he did on his solo ones, and the band made all the necessary adjustments to properly accommodate for his vocals, it still wouldn't have worked out because he could not sing most of the old songs in a way that would have been satisfactory to their fans.

The simple fact is that he was the wrong man for the job. Having said that, I admire Maiden for at least taking a risk rather than playing it safe ala Priest and hiring a clone singer.

Even if Bruce remained in Maiden their popularity would have gone down anyway because the mid 90's wasn't a great time for traditional metal, especially in the Anglosphere, and they were already on the downward slide with No Prayer and Fear... anyway. Dickinson's exited the band at just the right time, and he returned at just the right time too. It seemed almost by design really.

Halford's return to Priest wasn't quite as successful for a number of reasons I believe: 1)Angel Of Vengeance, while respectable, wasn't as good as Brave New World. I'm not suggesting that B.N.W was stellar--it wasn't, at least not in my view anyway--but it was a better album. 2)Halford probably lost a lot of good will by moving away from metal in the mid to late 90's, especially in the U.S, which was always Priest's biggest market. 3)Priest were not as popular as Maiden on a worldwide scale. 4)Nostradamus

Not even going to try to troll you, I totally agree with all of this.

I saw Wolfsbane support Maiden in Dublin in 91 (I think) and thoroughly enjoyed them. I remember thinking Blaze was particularly ace on the night (I'd never heard Wolfsbane before), so, once the news was out that Blaze was replacing Bruce I thought 'Yeah, I can see that'. Didn't really work out so well, as it turned out.

1990:

Agreed, Wolfsbane were excellent that night. I think I'd only heard Manhunt at that point, so that a definite highlight, but they put on a great show alright.

I also saw Priest in the Astoria in 98 and regardless of whether Owens was a 'clone' or not, he was fucking brilliant.

That Live In London album with him is fantastic.

His Priest studio records were shite, though.

A couple of passable tracks each, but larglely awful, yes.

He was excellent on the 80's stuff and the Painkiller material. No so much a fan of his work on things like 'Beyond The Realms Of Death' though.

Well Kiske's style was very obviously influenced by Dickinson, especially in the early days, so it kind of makes sense.

As for not letting Krauts sing for British metal bands, that's probably why Scheepers didn't get the job in Priest ;)

I think Maiden were really adamant about only accepting a British singer, I read/heard somewhere. That would obviously have limited the options. Not to the extent to which Blaze's vocals were then though.

I'm glad that they did that. For instance, Tim Owens' American accent just ruined many of Priests' songs. Like on Painkiller, he would sing "Painkillerr" with that long-hanging 'r' instead of "Painkilla"; it sounded weak, watery and ugly. I think it may have been a similar situation with Maiden if they didn't have that prerequisite.

After reading the Iron Maiden 90's thread, I am curious to know your favorite Maiden song from each album. The survivor threads were difficult to follow individual choices cos some people didnt vote, voted anonomously or it was rigged etc. Mine:

Remember Tomorrow (IM)
Wrathchild (Killers)
Children Of The Damned (666)
Flight Of Icarus (POM)
Powerslave (Powerslave)
Stranger In A Strange Land (SIT)
The Evil That Men Do (SSOASS)
Judas My Guide (FOTD)
Public Enema #1 (NPFTD)
Lord Of The Flies (XF)
Futureal (V-XI)
Dream Of Mirrors (BNW)
Face In The Sand (DOD)
Brighter Than A Thousand Suns (AMOLAD)
Coming Home (TFF)

Shadows Of The Valley (BOS)

The only one that were difficult to chose was FOTD cos I also love Fear Is The Key. And Futureal was only chosen cos its over soon.

On a slightly off-topic note, I'm listening to No Prayer For the Dying for the first time in a number of years and I'm genuinely shocked by how bad it is. It seems that every time I listen to this album, my reaction is the same; 'how could this album be so horrendous?', and just when I think it can't be any worse, I listen to it again some years later and dislike it even more than last time. What were they thinking?!

It's pure pub rock, for the most part. Absolutely subpar. That said, the live versions on that Wembley 'bootleg' from that tour are better, just.

Even Fear of The Dark doesn't sound that good to my ears nowadays.

I saw them on the tour for NPFTD. They were awesome as usual but the new songs stuck out like a sore thumb. Utter shite.

Same (1990, Point Depot?). My first time to see them, so I was ridiculously excited but when they played the No Prayer... stuff I just zoned out.

Fear Of The Dark was always crap too, BTW. A few decent songs between the two albums, but moslty pub rock filler.

I still get a lot of enjoyment out of the 'good' songs off FotD, but yeah, you can hardly call that album a return to form after the standard they had set in the 80s.

Yeah. The Point. I brought my younger cousin to see them. It was his first ever show and naturally he fucking loved it. I'd seen them in the UK 3 times by then. All 3 were Sound Cellar trips. You could pay the cost off in instalments which was cool. Powerslave, Somewhere On Tour (Hammy Odeon) and the 88 Donington.
