Why Do Bands Change Their Logos?
Seriously? Even Maiden and Motorhead have done it. Why arse around with something that was cool the first time around?

Re: Why Do Bands Change Their Logos?
Used to be a fashion thing didn't it, heavy metal was sad and juvenile and old-fashioned in the 90s and lots of 80s bands like Anthrax and Slayer and Metallica had very 80s logos that ten years later looked rather dated and childish so they got new logos that were more subtle and classy had more universal appeal and were in fact completely nondescript.
I always liked bands that have different logos and typographical aesthetics for each release, like Zep and Queen and the Purps and the Sabs.

I dont like it when they join up their name eg. Paradiselost, Septicflesh. I'm suprised Rotting Christ didnt become Rottingchrist!

Re: Why Do Bands Change Their Logos?
For the same reason that companies change their logos or people renovate their houses. It's just a facelift.
Most of the classic bands did it properly in my view.

Re: Why Do Bands Change Their Logos?
Which bands do you mean? And 'did it properly' in what way? All the classic bands who replaced their logo for a blander, weedier '90s alternative reverted to the 80s original as soon as it became retro enough to look cool again.

Re: Why Do Bands Change Their Logos?
I preferred Sepultura's 90's logos to their 80's ones.Slayer's weren't an improvement but they were at least respectable. Some looked worse(i.e bland), like Amorphis. It depends on the band.

Re: Why Do Bands Change Their Logos?
Some just change it from a distinct design to a pre-designed font. i.e. to or to Is it to gain more fans? Cos Immolation really haven't changed at all...

Re: Why Do Bands Change Their Logos?
Some just grow out of the spikey, stylised, 'evil' logo I suppose. Whether they've changed their sound or just perfected it, matured in their abilities as musicians and/or songwriters, or just aren't the 15 year-old metal warriors they once (thought they) were, a more straightforward logo may be an expression of that maturity.

A bit of the A got shot off, I never noticed that, that's brilliant, though I'm amused by your vituperativeness. I think Maiden losing the spikes was another panicked 90s marketing decision. Spikes were rather passe, making the whole logo fit on one line rendered it cleaner and neater like the 90s and less garish and ornate like the 80s. Yet it's on the Virtual XI sleeve, which is garish and ornate in completely the wrong way.

It depends on the band. Seps hit on one of the best fonts from the Beneath The Remains sleeve onwards, that art would have been ruined with their earlier crappy schoolbook logo on it. And yes, the first Amorphis logo has a dramatic impact, the later Amorphis logo looks like it's for a bottle of mineral water.

Re: Why Do Bands Change Their Logos?
Motley Crue changed with every album too I think. I think the Too Fast For Love and Dr Feelgood ones are best.
I don't mind so much when bands change their logo to be honest, but I can't stand when they streamline an old logo, like Death. When they then use the new version on re-issues or whatever, that gets on my tits.

Re: Why Do Bands Change Their Logos?
The Cure never seemed to have a consistent logo. I don't have much else to add.

Re: Why Do Bands Change Their Logos?
Immortal's logo change has always pissed me off. I would have to agree with the statement that the classic bands did logo changes well. Off the top of my head, Priest probably had one of the best logo changes; it was very indicative of their musical evolution and I think it worked perfectly well in conjunction with their sound.

Re: Why Do Bands Change Their Logos?
They have ruined the symmetry of the Priest logo now, by replacing the t with the trident symbol.
Just put it behind the logo if you want it seen, or in the background somewhere, like on the Painkiller cover, or Metal Works.
