I haven't had a chance to listen to that Clutch song, yet, but I find them to be fairly hit and miss on record: Earth Rocker was superb but Psychic Warfare left me cold, as did the proceeding albums to ER.

Yeah I agree that "From Beale Street To Oblivion" was pretty good but I prefer the previous two records to be honest. Particularly "Blast Tyrant" which is probably their best work in my opinion. I think Clutch have been reasonably consistent over the years actually. They've released a few albums that didn't appeal to me much but nothing obviously crap.

Since 'Blast Tyrant' Clutch seem to be treading a very similar path over and again to my ear, especially vocal/lyrics wise and with overall sonic feel. Mostly the vocals probably. All very grown up and professional and boogie-oriented, I don't find much of what they do that appealing anymore, which is a shame.

Can't criticize them harshly at all though, I thought 'Pure Rock Fury' was really disjointed and in hindsight looks aimless, so I can see why Blast Tyrant was a big deal, nailed a sound down and tangibly broadened their appeal, but on the flip I find they're comparatively homogenized from that point. I much prefer the records they put out when they were on their way to the sound they ended up finding. Weird how that was their major label era, when their output now looks a lot stranger with less broad appeal. Elephant Riders is their best for me, I still rate them objectively but not expecting to be rocked from my stance judging by the advance bits.

In terms of record sales, they peaked with their self titled and The Elephant Riders, but no doubt Clutch's stock started rising after Blast Tyrant, at least in terms of magazine coverage etc. Their popularity has grown worldwide since that time. I first realised this when they first toured Australia last decade and played sold out shows everywhere. That would have never happened in 98/99.

I still enjoy their output, but there was something special about their best 90's stuff.

I really liked Earth Rocker though.

Roughly similar here - I remember they got on at Download in UK around a decade or so ago, when YouTube and internet broadcasting was properly setting in, they really cracked it here from then on. I saw them on a warmup show for that exact festival appearance in maybe a 150-200 capacity venue. Fair enough it was sold out as I believe but I'd never see that again now.

Yeh same. In 98/99 they would have been lucky to pull 250 people here. When they toured for Beale St (or Strange Cousins - my memory fails me!) they played two sold out shows in Melbourne at a venue that holds roughly between 350-450 people, and that's being conservative.

Terrible video, too. Like he's going for a mid-'90s feel 20 years and a few stone too late. Nice skirt, Billy.
