Evoken - "Hypnagogia" (Release date: 9th November 2018)

US doom/death metal. I loved their last record so this should be good.

I'd like to see a DVD featuring all three bands: Opeth, Devin Townsend and Gojira is a hell of a line-up.

Pre-ordered it the day it was announced! Can't wait, the last one was fantastic (though it took a while to grow on me). Annoying that they're not playing here on the tour, they were amazing both times I've seen them.

I think it's referencing In Rock. Much the same way that their previous live album referenced 'Concerto for Group and Orchestra'.

They've definitely been on autopilot for a while now - apart from the last album, the last one that made an impression was Songs Of Darkness... The intervening ones haven't been bad, just samey.

I feel the same way. Haven't really bothered beyond a cursory glance since 'Songs Of Darkness...'. It just doesn't do anything for me anymore despite the consistency. Just can't quite put my finger on why.

I've got this on Spotify at the moment. First track basically reminds me of Lord Wind with a more solid beat. I don't think it's necessarily direction I was expecting. But it's only track one so we shall see how it goes. I certainly don't dislike it.

Hope it's better than their last yawnfest.

They lost the plot after "Train Of Thought". The one that followed was pretty damn awful. "Train.." wasn't their best but at least it had some distinction about it. There is something seriously eggy about everything they've done since, like they weren't fart dewed enough to begin with. I did like some of their various earlier guffs though to be fair. The vocals and keyboards are overwhelmingly flavoursome at times with this lot, but some classic solos, musical set pieces, and songs to be right to them.

Finally listened to it today (pre-orders be fucked, it came a week after its release date), it's good. Harks back to their '90s material.

Care to translate that into English?

I'm saying that analogously, in a musical sense and over time, they may have closely tracked the human fart horrendousness scale of the band's average age

I agree, but with one major exception: Black Clouds and Silver Linings.

The self titled had its moments too, but I wouldn't throw down on it.

The Astonishing was cheeks.

Post Re: Forthcoming Albums Vol. 2
Everything up to Train of Thought (maybe with the exception of Falling Into Infinity which is just... there), they were pretty consistent, or at the very least had new ideas or techniques to add to their arsenal. I think they have slowly lost a lot of subtleness that a far more understated (relatively speaking) touch on the keys contributed. Since then, they have pretty much just been treading water artistically, the last album being their nadir. It sometimes hard to comprehend how such a talented group of musicians (and James Labrie) can be so sterile and unexciting.

Has anyone mentioned the new Ocean album that coming out about now? I think that'll be my next major new release purchase.

They've done what a lot of older bands seem to do - get an idea that they're classic, or near, and start being a brand as much as a band. All the records now seem to be spiralling in on themselves in self-reference. Or worse, outside reference. They've always done that a bit, but they started doing it badly and for full song themes on "Octavarium" ("that Muse one", blatantly, among others). Fuck it, can't be bothered. There is so much technical music around now, thanks in part to this particular band normalizing mindblowing shit. I'm good with that and I like the records of their that I like.
