This actually interests me. I think they did do a 12" single not too long ago, though I haven't heard it.

Metal Blade is the right label for them too.

I hope they continue where they left off with 300% Density back in the early 00's.

Thirded. Big pimp for THE OCEAN here.

Always dug CANDIRIA. They could have set the world alight if they hadn't gotten all that money.

Well that album with their smashed van on the cover was certainly a step forward towards more accessible territory, but it was easily the worst album they had put out at that point.

They were never going to take the world by storm, at least not in their original guise anyway. i.e the music on their first 4 albums.

I'm actually glad I picked up their first two albums back in the late 90's when they were still relatively easy to get too.

Yeah, the TOO DAMN HYPE versions are tough to get a handle on.

Even though "What Doesn't Kill You" went far more 'acceptable', it was a pretty good album. I always looked upon that as a natural reaction to "300%..." because that one was SO good, it was likely impossible to follow up in the same vein. I hope they try now that it's been...wow...it"ll have been 15 years by the time the next one comes out. That's more than enough time for a proper follow up!

I thought they could have kept going they way they seemed to be heading and been a quality band that showed some real diversity and had some broad appeal.

Did they ever reissue those Too Damn Hype albums? Crisis' debut 8 Convulsions was also released on that label I believe.

My favourite Candiria albums are Beyond Reasonable Doubt and 300% Density. I saw a rave review for Beyond Reasonable Doubt in Terrorizer mag at the end of 1997 and figured I'd take a risk on it. It was a pricey import from memory as well. I had to make a special order for it.

Ah, those good old days when you actually took major risks blind buying albums you hadn't heard. It was great when it paid off, horrible when it didn't!

As I have mentioned before, I really, really like 'What Doesn't Kill You...'

'300% Density' is definitely my favourite though (part of that is possibly tied up with it being my first look at Candiria).

I am definitely looking forward to a new album.

Most people discovered them after they signed to Century Media. The 3 albums they released previously did not get much hype and were poorly distributed.

The metal market was a different place before Meshuggah released Chaosphere and Dillinger Escape Plan released Calculating Infinity. By the time 300% Density came out in 2001, there was already a market for that kind of ultra-technical off-kilter metal that did not fit neatly into any sub-categories.

I only like Remove Yourself on What Doesn't Kill You . . .

I really liked what I heard from 300% Density though.

Back to Candiria, what's rarely pointed out about them is that the reason their sound is so unique is because they are not really metalheads. They hit their stride at a time when the New York music scene was still hot, and they were just a sponge, soaking everything in, from alternative hip-hop to modern hardcore etc. When the elements finally clicked on their second album, Beyond Reasonable Doubt, there seriously wasn't a band on the planet that sounded remotely like them.

For a while their music was regarded as 'difficult', but on 300% Density they found a way to streamline their sound without completely watering it down. Yet even then, I don't recall the reviews being especially ecstatic. It only got a 7/10 in Terrorizer, for example. It was praised elsewhere, but it wasn't like it was 4 to 4.5 fists across the board.

I like the fact that they never really lost the (hard) 'core' element of their sound. They were a forward thinking band, but they could have only emerged at the time they did in the place they did.
