No, they got Dio in and made some classic records, then an OK one with Gillan, then they split and Iommi made a load of shitty AOR albums apart from that time in the early 90s when the Dio lineup got back together for a bit and made the most underrated Sabbath record ever.

Fixed.

Technical Ecstasy is nowhere near a 1/5 album either. It's certainly a steep drop off after Sabotage, but it still has some great moments on it [OK, two....] A 1/5 album is something irredeemably shite and TE is just mediocre.

Anyway, to address the thread topic:

Bands who have gone from a 5 fist record to a 1 fist record in one go:

Judas Priest: Defenders Of The Faith -----> Turbo

Sepultura: Chaos AD -------> Roots

Bands who went the other way and resurrected themselves from 1 to 5 fists:

Judas Priest: Ram It Down -----------> Painkiller

I can't recall any others. Usually it takes a couple of albums for a shift like that to happen. The examples I've given are notable for being exceptions to that pattern. I'd also argue that St. Anger was just as abrupt a decline, but ReLoad wasn't a 5 fist album so that disqualifies it. Tempted to argue that the shift from Tyr to Dehumanizer was a 1 to 5 fist move as well, but Dehumanizer isn't quite a 5 fist record and Tyr isn't quite a 1 fist one.

Nope, both 1 fist. Crappy, crappy records. Both of them are better than Roots though....

Maybe on Planet Clothears they are. The only solitary song that could possibly be considered to be 1 fist on RID is the Johnny B. Goode cover. "Ram it down", "Hard as Iron" and "Blood Red Skies" are easily the equal of anything on Painkiller.

I thought it was more of the opposite!

Honesty I'd rate both albums quite equal. Dehumanizer has ''TV Crimes'' and ''I'' which I never really cared for and Tyr has ''The Battle of Tyr'' and ''Feels Good to me'' which are just filler. Especially the latter might be the worst Tony Martin era BS track I've heard.

I've mentioned this here in numerous topics,. but here it's very apt.

DISILLUSION "Back to Times of Splendor" was a dimple shy of 5 fists, then they followed it up with "Gloria" which was utter balls.

''The Battle of Tyr'' filler? It's inextricable from "Odin's Court" and "Valhalla"

As I've said elsewhere before, the title track and Blood Red Skies are good songs but the drum machine just ruins them, especially on the latter.

You could have an OK EP out of the songs just mentioned if they had the drums re-recorded, but the rest of the album is trash. Love Zone/Love You To Death/Heavy Metal/I'm A Rocker are all duds.

Silliness! "Monster of rock" is great too. And Travis' drum sound on Painkiller was hardly particularly organic and musical. If that gets 5, then the drums on RID aren't an issue.

"Blood Red Skies", "Heavy Metal" & "I'm A Rocker" make "Ram It Down" worth listening to. The rest is really pretty disappointing.

"Hard as iron" and the title track say otherwise. Both are chock full of riffs, solos, awesomeness and ripping brilliance. Much like a lot of the rest of the album. Not a perfect album, no, but inexplicably overlooked by many.

"Monster of Rock" is one of the best things Priest have ever written.

I strongly disagree with both of those statements.

Simon Phillips was the best drummer Priest ever had. He was only 19 when they recorded Sin After Sin! It still sounds completely fresh.

Travis has never sounded musical really. He's essentially a metronome with some fills.

Les Binks' feet say otherwise.

Judas Priest have no 5/5 albums but both Turbo and Ram It Down are definite 1/5 turds. Sabbath ceased to be after Never Say Die!, this we know.

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned Filosofem and Dauði Baldrs. Personally, I think his only 5/5 album is the debut but I know others disagree.

"Filosofem" is undoubtedly a 5/5 but "Dauði Baldrs" isn't even close to a 1/5.
