I think WAS was the one who started the Surgical Steel 5 fist lunacy on here. Some others followed him into the madhouse with it and it now seems to have stuck. opaline is correct about SS here of course. You'd have to be handing out free fists in boxes of Cornklaes to give it 5.

Of course it's a 5/5 album, don't be silly.

Tempted to mention Death and the drop between Human and Individual Thought Patterns, but that's going from 5/5 to 2/5.

Surgical Steel is easily 5/5. One of the best metal albums released in the past few years. Took a bit to warm up to the melodic parts.

Wonder if Bathmat eats those?

Not quite 5-1-5 but as close as I think anyone is going to get.

British Steel - Point of Entry - Screaming for Vengeance

Two metal legends sandwiching a weak as piss 2 at best.

No.

Same as Turbo and Cold Lake.

No. Nein. Nyet.

3/5 - 2/5 - 4/5 IMO.

3/5 (maybe 4/5 at a push, but no way is NTC a 5/5 album) - 1/5 - 2/5 for me. Their only 5/5 album was Extreme Conditions... IMO. I've never rated their post NTC releases at all and of those I've heard, I find KTS particularly unlistenable.

Correct. They never went above a 3 after it.

No way is SOTAK a 5/5. Prey alone loses it at least 1/5, and if memory serves (I haven't heard it for years, mercifully) there's at least one other dodgy noise/ambient track on it. In addition, the songs are generally just poor, or at least vastly inferior to anything on the first two albums... I really couldn't rate it above 2/5.

I never bothered with them after that, they could have released their crowning glory since but, given that I'm told the subsequent material is more along the lines of the KTS & SOTAk, I see no need to ever check them out.

If the 5/5 rating is not kept for perfect records it is kind of meaningless.

Edit: I think it's either/or though. If 5 fists is for classics only then you need to work with, whisper it, the half-fist too.

Oh I certainly do.

Half marks are fine, obviously (ssshh, Rob).

The whole 5/5 allocation is up to the bestower, in terms of how it's given. As you've said, FMV, making a distinction between personal resonance and objective quality should probably be mentioned when dropping full marks as favourites and unquestionable classics are often far removed from one another:

I'd deem Nuclear Assault's Game Over a 5/5 and my (joint) favourite thrash album, but I can't see anyone agreeing that it's a perfect album by any means. It's a 5/5 for me as it was one of the first thrash albums I heard, and has been a favourite ever since, to the extent that it defines thrash for me, but I can hear the issues with its production, the silliness of the short songs (the Mr. Softee theme, for christ's sake!), Connelly's voice, etc.

Maybe a qualification? 5/5 (P) for personal favourites and 5/5 (O) for genuinely perfect albums? The arguments over objective and subjective merit will still be there but more informed, perhaps?

I really need a girlfriend.

Game Over is a 5/5, no question. Anyone who thinks otherwise can sit on a fucking cactus and spin.

My biggest problem with it was a massive fucking scratch on the record which turned Brain Death from a seven minute song into anything up to a 30 minute epic. It was right in the middle of one of the fast riffs and fitted perfectly, so I didn't suspect it the first time I listened to it, but got a bit suspicious when it had been playing the same thing for about 15 minutes. I thought the band had incredible stamina. I now have a pristine CD copy which also has The Plague and some live tracks tacked on the end. The sound is perfect, but a little of the character is gone. :|

I know it was released as a 'mini-album', but where would we put:

Need to Control - Kill Trend Suicide - Sounds of the Animal Kingdom

In a 5 -1 -5 game?

I think KTS is a couple of steps below the other two but one fist would be very harsh. Quite a few folk I know absolutely hated it on release though, and were five fists all the way for the pair sandwiching it.

Never actually heard Kill Trend Suicide, but I found Need To Control hard to listen to. I'd rate it 2 or 3, but then I love everything else Brutal Truth did, and would call everything else a 5.

Vinyl in 'is shit' shocker.

I must buy it myself, I have the tape somewhere still but it's no good to me now. A shame they haven't reissued Survive as well.

Objectively maybe, but most people would put BS and SFV at the very sharp end of Priest's catalogue. And Point of Entry right near the bottom. But still above Ram it Down, obviously.

Dokken - went from arguably their career best in Back For The Attack to the meandering personality crisis that was Dysfunctional.

Flotsam and Jetsam - From No Place to Disgrace to the recycled riff factory of When the Storm Comes Down.

Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2 to Pink Bubbles Go Ape.

Mastodon - Leviathan 8-) Blood Mountain

Pantera - Going from The Great Southern Trendkill to Reinventing the Steel? Jesus.
