Have you checked out the last NIN yet from 2012/13?

2016 wasn't a great year for music in my view, but here are my favs in alphabetical order:

*=top choice

METAL:

DEFTONES Gore
GORGUTS Pleiades’ Dust
IHSAHN Arktis
MADDER MORTEM Red In Tooth and Claw
MESHUGGAH The Violent Sleep of Reason
NEUROSIS Fire Within Fires*
OPETH Sorceress
PRONG X-No Absolutes
ROTTING CHRIST Rituals
TESTAMENT Brotherhood of The Snake

That's the first time either Opeth or Testament have made my top 10 list in eons, and it's definitely a first for Testament. It has been a slow year, and perhaps I just didn't listen to enough metal albums this year due to lack of interest. I was surprised at how good the Opeth was though. It's their best since Ghost Reveries, and I had pretty much given up on them.

Neurosis released their best album since 2004, so that was a no brainer. Rotting Christ's new album is better than their last few. Meshuggah are another band that I started to get bored of sometime in the mid 00's, but they have definitely returned to form in my eyes.

Every single band/artist on that list has been around for 20 years plus, so again, that either speaks to my conservatism or how much trouble the genre is actually in from a long term standpoint.

NON-METAL:

THE CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM Monolith of Phobos
LEONARD COHEN You Want It Darker
DEVANDRA BARNHART Ape In Pink Marble
DINOSAUR JNR Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not
PET SHOP BOYS Super
RADIOHEAD A Moon Shaped Pool
SWANS The Glowing Man*

HONORABLE MENTIONS:ABBATH, IN THE WOODS Pure, MEGADETH Dystopia, CANDIRIA While They Were Sleeping, ANTHRAX For All Kings, VIRUS Memento Collider, MASTERS HAMMER Formulae. METALLICA Hard Wired........(for at least being decent)

DISAPPOINTMENTS: SUN KIL MOON/JESU, DREAM THEATER.

Haven't heard: Anaal Nathrakh, Ulcerate, DEP, Bethlehem

Hesitation Marks? Yeah, dull as dishwater. This EP is nice and varied, the best thing he's put his name to since Year Zero, at least.

Pfft! It's varied but it sounds like off cuts to me.

Like I said, it's the first thing of his I've liked for a long time. My heart sunk when I heard Ross was now a permanent member of the 'band' (their scores together are so very, very dreary) but I enjoyed the EP. Maybe the short format suits them better...

Fair enough. I'm not happy that Ross is now an official member either because I'd prefer Reznor to keep their work separate from NIN.

Having said that, NIN is more of a side gig for Reznor now, and perhaps he feels less precious about it, or that changes need to be made to keep them relevant. Who knows. When was the last time he had a stable lineup for this 'band'? During The Downward Spiral era? He just hires session musicians for touring.

My top ten for the year

1. Ginger Wildheart - Year Of The Fanclub
2. Blood Ceremony - Lord Of Misrule
3. Vektor - Terminal Redux
4. Magrudergrind - II
5. Wormrot - Voices
6. Opeth - Sorceress
7. Kvelertak - Nattesferd
8. Old Corpse Road - Of Campfires and Evening Mists
9. Moonsorrow - Julimalten Aika
10. Metallica - Hardwired To Self-Destruct

Honourable mentions:
Rotting Christ - Rituals
Cliteater - From Enslavement To Clitoration
Mithras - On Strange Loops

I don't think it's been the best year for music. The thirteen albums I have listed above are literally the only new ones I have bought all year.
A few disappointments, the Kvelertak, Rotting Christ and Moonsorrow albums weren't as good as I had been hoping for as I had absolutely loved all of their previous work. Still good records, I just don't feel they're as strong as their predecessors.
Still the Opeth album is the strongest they have put out in a while, and I discovered a new band in Vektor (right before three quarters of the band fucks off) and the Ginger Wildheart was a surprise but it's definitely the strongest this he's put out in years.

I've been listening to the latest Oranssi Pazuzu over the last few days and I definitely underestimated it. It belongs in my top ten metal albums of the year.

I also listened to the new Superjoint and was pleasantly surprised. It's savage and stands heads and shoulders above their previous output.

^ Gore has a couple of metal moments (Doomed User & the title track), but overall I didn't think it was metal. Still really good though

It's the first one of theirs that I haven't listened to, I haven't enjoyed anything of theirs for a tediously long time.

^ I was a bit frustrated on my first few listens. I kept waiting for/expecting crunch and screams. Definitely their softest album, but one that eventually grabbed me.

That's because Mark Tremonti is also the guitarist for Creed.
