obviously anything like this is going to be subjective and it is like they chose something from every subgenre but actually if you were castaway and that lot was on an ipod you wouldn't be too disappointed would you?

Post Re: Best metal album each year since 1970
The first four years are not open for discussion as there wasn't any other genuine metal records released in those particular years. There weren't any metal records released at all in 1974 but I can understand why they'd put Budgie's "In For The Kill" as that was probably as close as the hard rockers got to metal that year. There's no way Scorpions' "Taken By Force" is a metal album. I'm shocked they didn't go for Judas Priest's "Sin After Sin" although I think it's a bit overrated & probably favour Quartz' self-titled debut over it personally.

My first decade or so would look like this:

1970 Black Sabbath - "Paranoid"
1971 Black Sabbath - "Master Of Reality"
1972 Black Sabbath - "Vol 4"
1973 Black Sabbath - "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"
1974 Budgie - "In For The Kill"
1975 Black Sabbath - "Sabotage"
1976 Judas Priest - "Sad Wings Of Destiny"
1977 Quartz - "Quartz"
1978 Judas Priest - "Killing Machine"
1979 Motorhead - "Overkill"
1980 Motorhead - "Ace Of Spades"
1981 Ozzy Osbourne - "Diary Of A Madman"
1982 Iron Maiden - "The Number Of The Beast"
1983 Slayer - "Show No Mercy"

Burn would've slotted in there nicely. Although Machine Head should've gone in for 1972 instead of Vol. 4.

I wouldn't class any Deep Purple albums as metal personally. They're very much a hard rock band for mine.

Not metal? Maaan - here we go again. The title track of Burn is almost speed metal, never mind the kind of heavy metal Sabbath were doing then. Ditto "Highway star". Blackmore and Gillan were upping the ante massively at the time.

Nope. Rock band all the way. 'Heavier' than Zeppelin, obviously but never a metal band, especially considering that they predated the genre. Blues rock, case closed.

Exactly. Metal started in 1980 with Iron Maiden's debut. It peaked with Dragonforce's 2008 tour de force Ultra Beatdown.

If Deep Purple are not hard rock then I don't know what is. They fit so comfortably under that genre tag. Yes they had a few faster, more aggressive songs & they influenced bands like Judas Priest in a pretty major way but that doesn't make them a metal band.

Aerosmith's Get Your Wings, Rush's debut and Judas Priest's Rocka Rolla were all out in 1974, again all more hard rock though...

Most of the choices are fairly safe and predictable, nothing too awful though (apart from Children of Bodom).

The list is ok until it gets to the mid 90s or so, then things start getting a little pear shaped. I can't fathom the idea that Death had the metal album of the year in 1998, and The Great Mass is not even Septic Flesh's best album let alone the best album of 2011.

Agalloch's The Mantle is better than Meshuggah's Nothing, Immortal's Sons of Northern Darkness, Isis' Oceanic, Mastodon's Remission and countless others? Yeh right!

2003.wasn't a great year for the genre from memory, but it couldn't have been so lousy to justify a top place for Children of Bodom!

Alternative sanity, more like.

Too much to go through at once so I'll start with my favourites from 1970-1980.

I also really can't be arsed with yet another "what constitutes metal?" debate, so my list includes anyone I associate with both Hard Rock and Metal and fuck the petty distinctions.

1970 - Black Sabbath - Paranoid
1971 - Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
1972 - Black Sabbath - Vol. 4
1973 - Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
1974 - Kiss - Kiss
1975 - Alice Cooper - Welcome to my Nightmare
1976 - AC/DC - High Voltage or Rainbow - Rising. Fuck, pick either one.
1977 - AC/DC - Let there Be Rock
1978 - Alice Cooper - From The Inside
1979 - AC/DC - Highway to Hell
1980 - Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden

Post Re: Best metal album each year since 1970
Here's mine from 1970-2009, although I've missed out a few years here and there. Also, Deep Purple are hard rock, but they do have metallic elements to their sound and are an important influence on lots of earlier metal bands, so I can see why they are included. With this in mind, I've gone for the nearest hard rock album there is to metal when selecting the 70s years with no obvious metal releases. I also don't listen to much BM/DM/grindcore so it's a pretty unbalanced list really.

1970 - Black Sabbath - Paranoid
1971 - Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality
1972 - Black Sabbath - Vol. 4
1973 - Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
1974 - Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties
1975 - Black Sabbath - Sabotage
1976 - Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny / Rainbow - Rising (tie)
1977 - Judas Priest - Sin After Sin
1978 - Judas Priest - Stained Class
1979 - Motorhead - Bomber

1980 - Iron Maiden - s/t
1981 - Black Sabbath - Mob Rules
1982 - Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast
1983 - Slayer - Show No Mercy
1984 - Metallica - Ride The Lightning
1985 - Accept - Metal Heart
1986 - Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time
1987 - Candlemass - Nightfall
1988 - Slayer - South Of Heaven / Metallica - ... And Justice For All (tie)
1989 - Sabbat - Dreamweaver

1990 - Judas Priest - Painkiller
1991 - Skyclad - The Wayward Sons Of Mother Earth / Cathedral - Forest Of Equilibrium (tie)
1992 - Alice In Chains - Dirt / Black Sabbath - Dehumanizer (tie)
1993 - Sepultura - Chaos AD
1994 - Skyclad - Prince Of The Poverty Line
1995 - Cathedral - The Carnival Bizarre
1996 - Metallica - Load (I just haven't heard many albums from that year)
1997 - Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics
1998 - Primordial - A Journey's End
1999 - Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter (same as 1996)

2000 - Skyclad - Folkemon / Iron Maiden - Brave New World (tie)
2001 - Tool - Lateralus
2002 - Reverend Bizarre - In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend
2003 - Iron Maiden - Dance Of Death
2004 - Motorhead - Inferno
2005 - Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness
2006 - Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life And Death
2007 - Primordial - To The Nameless Dead
2008 - The Gates Of Slumber - Conqueror (again, not heard a lot from this year)
2009 - Alice In Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue

Meanwhile, back in reality...Deep Purple were one of the originators of heavy metal and one of its finest exponents. Only in 2017 on teH interwebz could this fact be in dispute. The wilful ignorance about this on here would make David Irving blush.

Good call on BÖC though. And Alice and AC/DC (Spiny gets it). And even KISS who despite being gay and shit deserve a mention.

Not a single metal band mentioned here. I think you're projecting the 'wilful ignorance' thing TBH.
