A friend asked me which Tool album she should check out. I suggested Lateralus, but I was a bit torn if I should suggest it or Ænemia. So I had to have a listen, even though I’ve probably heard this album enough. I think it maintains an atmosphere better without all the interjections of (what I assume is) sardonic humour that it’s predecessor has, though there are probably songs on their sophomore LP that I consider better than anything on Lateralus. Still not sure.
They're both extremely strong however I think "Lateralus" is slightly stronger; mainly due to "Aenima" including a couple of throwaway tracks in "Intermission" & "Die Eier von Satan". I don't think there's a weak track on "Lateralus".

Aenima is their most important album in terms of impact and influence, but Lateralus is probably their best overall album, yes.
Having said that, Tool's best 'direct' songs were probably on their first two albums.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Vol. VIII
I did consider recommending Undertow to my friend briefly, as she is far more into the straight alternative metal of Deftones, Helmet, etc., and that is far closer than anything on Lateralus. I was trying to get at I think the highlights of Ænemia were stronger, but yes, overall, Lateralus is just such a solid flowing album (except for maybe the last track, but I have a soft spot for it, as I fell asleep listening to the album on headphones once, in the dark, and was awoken by the static and paranoid voice, and it genuinely freaked the hell out of me until I regained my faculties).

Black Sabbath - Dehumanizer
Been in a Dio mood lately. Hard to believe he was 49 when this came out.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Dehumanizer amongst the Sabbath/Dio catalogue. I feel like people talk about the Martin releases far more these days, understandable given that they are so more readily available and we haven’t heard them a million times like the Ozzy era, or first Dio era, but this record rarely gets a look in. It was certainly a bit retro for 1992, but I still enjoy it immensely.
Now Playing:
Always loved this. Shoegaze bands that still RAWK seem to be forgotten these days for far more mellow bands. Get a pulse guys!

It just makes me wish Black Sabbath tried something like that album way sooner. In a way I'd argue it definitely sounds like some sort of comeback after the lightweight Dio/Tony Martin stuff.

49 is nothing for metal singers nowadays though. Dio's voice was still quite good even before he died.
N.P JUDAS PRIEST Firepower
^^This album still sounds damn good to me. Definitely not one to throw in the pile after the first few months.

What do you mean? That singers of nowadays by the age of 49 are still capable of delivering the goods mostly?
And yeah Dio rocked until he died, really. Definitely.

Yes, although some wear and tear is obviously noticeable in most of them. Plenty of popular rock and metal singers still sounded great at that age though. e.g Halford, Dickinson, Steven Tyler etc
