I always forget what this album sounds like.

Black/doom/death metal from Israel. I dig this stuff.

Don't think this band is for me. Can't say they're unoriginal though.

Really? It's a fucking brilliant comeback, IMO. It sounds like Possessed. Not Possessed trying to sound like Morbid Angel or poxy Deicide or any other shit that might have happened. If you really want to hear how shit Possessed might have been track down the fucking awful demos Torrao did back in the early 90s. The depressing sound of utter desperation. I'm fucking chuffed here.

Oh it's certainly better than the last Morbid Angel but I'm just not feeling this one. ''No More Room in Hell'' is still a cool track though.

NP:

I actually like Holmes attempt at the heavier songs here. Compared to 1995 or so, he actually sounds like he's singing instead of just yelling without too much control.

Never cared so much about this album but I dig it quite a bit now. Those massive, groove-y riffs!

All SLOT albums:

It took me a while to get used to the sound, the 'sloppiness' and a few of the disjointed song structures, but it definitely won me over with time. Now I really like it, but I can't say I listen to it much. When I'm in the mood for PL, I don't tend to go back further than Draconian Times, and I frequently find myself reaching for one of their more recent albums like Tragic Idol etc.

Predictable but the last good DM album I heard was the Pestilence.

I'd argue Shades of God is a very ''Anti-PL'' album in the sense that it's got those loose songstructures which you don't really find on any other albums. It's probably also the band at their doomiest; more Trouble and Sabbath influenced, than say, Celtic Frost as they were on Gothic or Metallica/SoM influenced as they were on Icon. Isn't this album our favorite Russian's favorite though?

As far as modern death metal aping old ones go, I still only like Venenum's S/T EP and Obliteration's Black Death Horizon.

I like the first song a lot. The rest not so much.

^^That's because Strange Machines is the catchiest song on there. The rest of the album is more subdued but no less captivating. Having said that, I'm coming at it from a completely different perspective. The perspective of an old fart that heard it when it was new and novel I have a lot of nostalgia for that album, but nostalgia alone doesn't explain why I still listen to it occasionally. There are plenty of albums I enjoyed back in the mid 90's that are virtually unlistenable now. That isn't one of them.
