Sounds like a bizarre thing Chuck Schuldiner could have come up with if only he decided to use his technical skills for something far more brutal than his own 90's outputs. This is really quite something.

Still a great album. Can't believe how much it stands head and shoulders above the rest of their catalogue.

Haven't listened to this in a long, long time. Still quite pleasant without being extraordinary.

Opeth are a band I supported from the beginning and felt they were underrated as hell. Contrary to what you hear now, they were NOT at all popular until the late 90's and early 00's. esp not their first two albums, but then they became overexposed and released a few ordinary albums.
Their last album was the first I bought since 2005 and it honestly surprised me, so perhaps I'm back into them again. Maybe.
Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Vol. VIII
I'd say they didn't really start to pick up steam beyond the underground until probably 'Blackwater Park' in 2001, and didn't really reach a real wide audience until signing with Roadrunner for 2005's 'Ghost Reveries', which is probably really their last real essential album for mine. Some like to talk up 'Watershed', but I get the impression that for a lot of people it was the first Opeth release they waited for and anticipated.
To me at least, the cracks were starting to show in their compositions on that album, at the very least the way they would transition through different parts (and not even necessarily from distorted to clean sections), probably the choppiest they'd consistently been since 'Morningrise'.
At any rate, like a lot of bands that get popular in the internet age, a few too many people take them as the be all, end all, which is unfortunate because during their halcyon years they were very good at what they did despite the little fanfare they received around that period.
Certainly not for everyone I can understand.
