Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Vol. VIII
Was playing: For whatever reason, I was getting Alice In Chains s/t vibes from 'Dead Speak Kindly'. Now Playing: :format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(40)/discogs-images/R-1144583-1195683276.jpeg.jpg) I sometimes wonder what it says about me still listening to something so angsty as I approach middle age. Is it just nostalgia, and is that a bad thing? Or is it purely just musical, and that's the way I'm wired, to enjoy stuff like this?

I've asked myself those same questions several times over the years, especially when listening to bands like LOA, and specifically while revisiting Ugly back in late 2016. It's odd listening to Keith sing 'I'm lost at 22, and I've got no fucking clue' when you are either 40 or pushing 40 and nodding your head/or tapping your feet along with it. When I first heard the song at 17 I recall thinking that 22 seemed like a while away

Ha, yeah I can definitely relate to that. Ultimately, I think I still enjoy the songs, and I’m pretty lax on reading too much into lyrics at the best of times, or at least just pushing them to the side when they don’t engage me but that is not a dealbreaker for me. The riffs, vocal melody and groove are all happening on Ugly so I’m willing to go with it. And besides, I admit I can relate to having those feelings at 22 so it is more like a snapshot. Maybe the emotional impact of the lyrics are more the nostalgic side of things. Maybe if they didn’t have a band name like Life of Agony I’d feel more comfortable listening to them Now Playing:

They really seem to be giving this reunion a serious chance.

I don't necessarily mind the concept, it just isn't done all that well. It feels way too cartoony, when I know the music really isn't cartoony at all. Now Playing:

Black Cab was reminding me of the start of this album (all the synthiness), so... Now Playing:
