As expected, this doesn't do much for me at all so far. :( )

EDIT: I enjoyed ''Our Church, Below the Sea'' and ''Trinity'' - those actually remind me a little bit of their earlier stuff that I'm way more familiar with.

Have you got to Imaginary Sonicscape yet? Probably still my favourite Sigh but not cos Varg was involved. Did you hear that horrid Proscriptor album?

After hearing Hail Horror Hail and Scenario IV: Dread Dreams I thought it was time to stop checking more outputs of this band. Those records are just too bizarre for my taste.

BTR has great riffs but outside the title and final track I sometimes keep losing track of what track sounds like and tbh I think ''Inner Self'' is just a boring. I think Arise sounds a bit half arsed; sure it's still thrashy but it's bland thrash.

I can understand the criticisms of Beneath The Remains, but Arise is great - a bit more focused but still razor sharp riffing and incisive vocals. I think the novelty of Schizophrenia is just that we haven't all listened to it a billion times.

That's how I got into them! They were too weird for my BM-loving ex so she gave me her Infidel Art CD. Before that I had only heard 'Ready For The Final War' on that Blackend comp. But from then on I was hooked. (Now listening to Heir To Despair)

Mantas - "Death By Metal" demo (1984)

The earliest legitimate death metal recording that I'm aware of even if it is admittedly a thrashier variety of death metal. I don't think much of it to be honest. The recording quality of three of the four tracks is really awful & I only find myself enjoying the live version of "Evil Dead" as it sounds much better than the other tracks.

Voivod - "To The Death" (1984)

A more than decent album-length demo from the Canadian thrash metal legends. In fact I'd suggest that it's not that far behind their debut album "War & Pain" in overall quality with most of the album's tracklisting appearing here as well along with some additional originals & a few cover versions of Venom & Mercyful Fate tracks. This was clearly a recording of a live performance although I'd assume that it was done in a rehearsal space or recording studio as there's no crowd noise. The sound quality is very good for an 80's demo tape & the musicianship is quite brilliant. Despite what you may read, there's absolutely no thrash metal here with Voivod championing more of a combination of speed metal & hardcore punk. There's little evidence of the progressive influence that would appear in ever greater quantities with each subsequent release. If I'm overly critical I'd suggest that "To The Death" could do with a bit more variety as things do start to sound a little samey after a while. A 70 minute demo was always going to be an ambitious undertaking though & they've made a really good fist of it. I'm not surprised that Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records picked them up off the back of this.
