Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Vol. VIII
I don't think I've listened to it from start to finish since it came out. I found it disappointing, a major step down from The End Complete, which itself was inevitably a step down from Cause Of Death. Just not very interesting, despite the new lyrical direction and longer songs. The album itself is also too long IMO.

I'm not afraid to admit that I quite like it.

That is a really pointless column imo. Most of the albums that I've seen from there are far from universally hated.
I recall the consensus about World Demise at the time being that it was OK/decent but a huge step down from previous efforts, which is basically what Sol said. The End Complete was a huge album, one of the biggest selling DM albums of all time, and all eyes were on Obituary to deliver and the feeling was that they kind of bunted rather than outright failed.
It wasn't a disgrace by any stretch, but it wasn't the album they hoped would take them to the next level commercially. In fact, it had the exact opposite effect and almost killed them. When they returned with Back From The Dead in 1997, the stench of death (excuse the pun) was definitely present. They were a spent force, creatively and commercially, and whatever momentum they gathered on their first few releases had well and truly dissipated.
To me its biggest problem is that it's awfully front loaded. It starts off with a bang then kind of loses steam around the halfway mark and never fully recovers. It's certainly a good album, but is it a great one? Not to me.

I wouldn’t disagree that it’s runtime is a bit too much. Maybe if they trimmed a couple of the weaker cuts off it, or maybe tightened some of the arrangements up. 50 minutes is almost always too much when it comes to death metal. But apart from that I love it, even more so than The End Complete, which I’ve always been a bit miffed about its general placement above World Demise in the Obituary standings, especially coming off the back of Cause of Death. I always disliked the production on it more than anything. But I’m off to listen to my fave Obituary now.

Do we need more chainsaw solos?

Have they done 'Illud...'? I'd be curious to hear anyone's defence of that fucking thing.

Yeah, there's a few on here who hold that opinion. I'm not one of them.
Some people might also try to sell you on the fact that at least they tried something different (and potentially that you’re closed-minded in only wanting them to make a good, old school death metal record), all whilst never addressing the actual quality of the more alternative or industrial styled tracks.

did you like the last album? Seems like it has already been forgotten. Made no lasting impression whatsoever.
