Maybe I should revisit Gamma Ray once more. I wrote them off as a boring band full of rip offs but oh well.

I’d recommend Land of the Free from Gamma Ray. Great Euro PM. As far as rip offs go, just remember Kai Hansen was leading Helloween at the start. If anything, a lot of the similar bands that came after were aping his work. As for boring, there’s no accounting for taste :P

I was listening to Lucifer II just before, so was feeling inspired for the genuine article. I’ve owned their self titled follow-up for much longer, where they ditched much of the occult themes. Despite featuring heavy here, they are still effectively a psych/folk band. ‘Come To The Sabbat’ is just a touch too corny for me though.

A bit too much on the ballad/hardrock side sometimes, but it's not bad.

^^This is a surprisingly good album. Probably their best since Portnoy left. The production is very good, not flat like their last few, the drumming is less robotic, and the album is a tasty mix of progressive and heavy elements. The songs have a pleasing directness to them that has been largely missing this decade.

The Astonishing was a complete snoozefest and the only DT album I haven't bought since jumping onboard in the mid 90's, but this has put them back in my good books.

Enjoyed that S/T Obituary. 4 fists. But a lot of their songs are samey. Turn To Stone. Redefine. Solid State.

I hadn’t played this in a long time. Always some great parts, not necessarily the best song construction. ‘Black Rose Immortal’ always felt like the objective was to write a 20 minute song, not a cohesive piece. Even compared to long form arrangements by Rush, Yes, etc., it lacks a narrative feel and logical progression, essentially just being ‘bits’ bookending each other. This could be said for much of the album, not including ‘To Bid You Farewell’ which does have a nice flow. Despite all that, I still enjoy this album for its melodies and interplay, and the atmosphere.

I think it's a very solid release but I agree with everything you said there essentially. "Morningrise" was a clear step up from "Orchid" in my opinion though. I like "Orchid" but it was over-ambitious & the lack of direction & flow in the song-writing & composition is obvious. I prefer all of Opeth's later metal releases over it even though I find it enjoyable when it's on.

re OPETH: I feel those early albums have a special 'atmosphere' that Opeth never quite managed to recapture on later releases, but there is no doubt that they became 'tighter' songwriters over time. I had a longsleeve Morningrise shirt in 96 which I proudly wore around town when they were a legitimately new and different band that hadn't been embraced by all and sundry. They seemed like a real discovery/find then, so I guess to some degree nostalgia blinded my view of their actual progress.

What happened in my case is that I just got bored of their style for a while and failed to appreciate their growth as songwriters. Ghost Revelries sounded just OK to me in 2005, but when I revisited 5 or so years later I realised it's actually one of their best albums. They bored me again until recently with Sorceress. Really enjoyed it.
