Tales is very much a product of its time. I still enjoy it, but there is a naivety to it that is hard to ignore, and the clean vox have not aged well. I do like the sound and atmosphere, and the growls are somewhat distinctive. Some of it is damn cheesy nowadays though.

I wish they released an album between Karelian and Tales that functioned as more of a bridge.

N.P Rakim The 18th Letter.

Edit: Sol, you just beat me to it! I disagree that it is sterile and lifeless though. It is very atmospheric to me, esp in its time.

Some early songs off The Chasm seem to recall death metal Amorphis, but in an even more epic and cinematic manner.

I'm willing to admit Tales... is a big old piece of nostalgia for me. It's a bit amateurish, and a bit cheesy, but something about it (the atmosphere as well as the aforementioned attributes I would imagine) just transports me back to a very specific time and place - pre-internet, when everything, particularly metal from far flung corners of the world (at least relative to me) had an air of mystery to it that was so appealing to my teenage self. I probably wouldn't give it a second listen in the current day if I'm being honest.

Probably the best imitation of a any classic thrash metal band I can think of.

The album just seemed very 'singular' at the time, right down to its artwork. All the pieces fit nicely together, but I totally get why a young metal fan today might be totally indifferent to it.

There are plenty of great riffs and melodies though, or at least enough for me to ignore the stuff that sounds cheesy now, but it is no longer the 5/5 album I thought it was at the time.

Regarding its 'amateurishness', it's an odd mix of professional and amateur. They were barely out of their teens when they recorded it. Their keyboardist looked 15 at the time.

Revisiting this, and as much as I really enjoy it, it kinda bummed me out a bit because it seems pretty bleak and hopeless lyrically in places (I don't know if this is a bad thing as it is really evocative).

Now playing:

Went with something a bit more light, content-wise.

I actually enjoy this more than I thought I would. Far from ground breaking, but done really solid, with some surprisingly memorable hooks.

Revisiting Deftones' prior album with their new one coming out tomorrow. I remember being a bit lukewarm on this when it first came out, especially compared to the previous few which really seemed to reinvigorate them. Man, it's sure brickwalled.

/\ /\ /\ Actually surprised by how much I enjoyed Gore after going back to it. Pretty solid, just lacking some real strong highlights.

Also have a new one coming out that I'm looking forward to. This was another one that was a bit meh, but probably more due to me not being able to give it a really good couple of listens to really familiarise.

^ One of the best albums ever.

NP:

This just isn't very good. Maybe I'm too conventional with my ideas, but progressive lightweight metal just isn't very interesting. At least this is better than what Queensryche did in the same year, but still.

I do like this Disney metal. This is the closest to Midnight Eternal who I love!

One of the most underrated metal bands of the 90's. Did you like their reunion album from 2017? Can't believe it's already 3 years old.

N.P CEELO Green Ceelo Green is Thomas Calloway.
