Post How much have your views on metal changed?
I've been on this board for a while now and I'm aware a lot of posters here are/were apart of the English metal scene. Given your unique perspective of a lot of seminal bands in doom/death metal, how much have your views changed on the state of the metal scene or how much do you still regularly listen to metal albums? Is it more difficult now to play shows, release albums, and are you impressed less with the albums of newer bands?

What do you think of the state of the music now back to when you were playing shows/releasing your material? Does material from younger bands remind you of the olden albums or does it lack the same power for you?

Been thinking about this - I realize I've gone of 'genre' metal - most bands I like now are a mash-up of genres eg. PL, KJ even B-M! But I still like certain genre bands.

I think everyone who played in UK bands the olden days has left the forum now. When was the last truly great UK metal album? Bands like Cruciamentum or Grave Miasma are good but real classics?

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats' "Blood Lust" seemed to create quite a stir back in 2011. That's about as close as I can think of from this decade.

Purson as well now that I think of it. Neither band released anything outstanding though. UA&TDB sound much too like Oasis for comfort. Purson were just forgettable.

Are Uncle Acid... metal? More of a psychedelic rock sound to my ears.

The thread title should be more specific.

I don't think they are personally but they always seem to be covered by the metal media & are often referred to as doom metal.

How about Esoteric's "The Maniacal Vale"?

I'm a fan of anything related to Mr Jennings, but the album is hardly a classic British metal album. And he is the only Brit in the band anyway.

When you really think about it, the UK metal scene as a whole has been in trouble for at least 20 or so years now. The first signs of trouble were clearly evident around the time of Pulkas and Kill II This (97/98). It was an early warning that the scene was starting to divest itself of any real character and content to follow US trends. Probably the most blatant example of this was the transformation of Pitchshifter from respected underground band to commercial wannabes. Truth be told they were actually a bit of a hybrid affair, mixing up US and UK musical influences, but Pitchshifter.com was definitely a bad omen and left a bad taste in many people's mouths.

Some might argue that the problem really goes back to Dub War, but Dub War were a far more interesting proposition musically than those bands even if they never realized their potential, and even considering that Skindred--who rose from their ashes and seemed more tailored for the US market--ended up being a bit of a disappointment.

After 1993, it was only really COF that left a serious impression for the rest of the decade until bands like Akercocke and Anaal came along and we ended up with some quality UK black metal or hybrid death/black forms, but that was relatively short lived and it was less than a handful of bands. The bands in question also peaked in the early to middle part of the decade too, and there hasn't been much activity since that time.

There are a few old stalwarts still releasing decent albums (e.g MDB, PL, COF, Primordial etc), but with the exception of Primordial none of those bands have released their best work in that time period, and exciting new bands are as rare as hen's teeth. And the newish bands that are quite good were formed from the remains of old ones. e.g With The Dead, Memorium.

At this end of the world you all seem the same. Some soggy island full of drunks off the northwest coast of Europe. It just seems half of your lot are down here building or pulling cow tits, and spreading chlamydia because the instructions on condoms are too complicated. :P
