Post QOTSA 'Villains' official thread....
Image

Release date: August 25 on Matador Records

01. Feet Don't Fail Me
02. The Way You Used To Do
03. Domesticated Animals
04. Fortress
05. Head Like A Haunted House
06. Un-Reborn Again
07. Hideaway
08. The Evil Has Landed
09. Villains Of Circumstance

Quote:
Produced by Mark Ronson and co-produced by Mark Rankin and mixed by Alan Moulder, "Villains" is the first full album offering from QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE since 2013's "…Like Clockwork" gave the band its first No. 1 album in the U.S. Like the stunning artwork of returning illustrator Boneface, the sonic signatures of the lineup that took "…Like Clockwork" around the world and back are as unmistakable as ever, though coexisting with sufficient new twists to induce recurring double takes. As Homme himself puts it: "The most important aspect of making this record was redefining our sound, asking and answering the question 'what do we sound like now?' If you can't make a great first record, you should just stop — but if you can make a great record but you keep making records and your sound doesn't evolve, you become a parody of that original sound."

The last album I bought of theirs was Lullabies to Paralyze and that pretty much ended my interest.

When I started listening to that song, I didn't like it very much, but it seemed to grow on me as it went on. At least it's got a bit of energy to it. It's not "Songs for the Deaf"-type energy, but it's better that most of their recent output.

I doubt I'll buy the album, unless they release other songs that pique my interest more.

That song's dreadful.

Same. Three songs aside (Little Sister, Medication and In My Head) it was dreadful - as were the following two, but in their entireties.

I think that's a bit harsh. "Lullabies to Paralyze" was certainly a step down from their earlier material but it was still worth a listen. I agree that "Era Vulgaris" was a misfire but "...Like Clockwork" was pretty good & their best since "Songs For The Deaf".

Should have stopped after songs for the deaf.

Definitely. Each of their first three albums is great but each successive one is a noticable step down from the previous one. That step became a cliff for LTP. Overlong, underwritten, poorly produced and just... dull. They haven't improved since.

All of their albums have their moments, but there is no getting around the fact that their first three albums are easily their best. Even Rated R, as shambolic as it feels at times, works somehow when taken as a whole, whereas Lullabies only works in fits and starts.

Having said that, I find Songs For The Deaf a tad overrated.

It is, and those fucking pointless radio intros don't help matters. I'd give it 3/3. They were amazing on that tour, though.

Was that the Ambassador they played in that time? They're playing in The Point this November apparently. €50 a pop.

The first QOTSA album is the only one I ever managed to get really into. I do like certain tracks from the next two, but there was nothing after those that really engaged me.

They were always a step down after Kyuss. Even at their best they never really troubled the 5 fist mark.

QOTSA's debut is better than a few Kyuss albums, or at least just as good. Are you telling that that Circus album is better? No chance

QotSA are more even than this thread suggests. Their high was the first 3 albums of course but none of them were really excellent. Their downside (the second 3 albums) is overstated - they did become mediocre but all of those albums have their moments.

On the other hand once Kyuss hit their stride (Blues for the Red Sun) they were often outstanding and never dull.

Funny, I always found Kyuss to be fairly average overall. They had their moments, definitely but in the grand scheme of things, I could happily do without them. It's Garcia's vocals, mainly. Definite weak link there.

Yes, that was at the Ambassador. I wasn't into them beforehand, I'd only heard the odd song but a mate brought me along and I was converted there and then. I wouldn't cross the road to see them live now.

Frankly, I'd rather listen to Sungrazer than either band these days.

Qotsa s/t is a five fist rock classic, so is Kyuss welcome to sky valley.

I would agree that "Queens of the Stone Age" is easily a better record than either "Sons Of Kyuss" & "Wretch". That seems pretty obvious to me however I do indeed rate "...And the Circus Leaves Town" ahead of it.

I love the first three. Apart from the radio interlude on SFTD; I would put them all between 4-5 fists. I'm probably in the minority here but I also enjoy EV. The rest are fairly bland unfortunately and the new song doesn't raise my hopes.

Agree with most on here, the first 3 albums are very good, the rest not so.
The split with Kyuss is great too.

It's certainly worth a listen but I'm not sure I'd say that it was "great". There aren't any weak tracks but there isn't anything terribly amazing either.
