The whole grunge was anti-metal thing was largely a media invention. The bands generally wanted to distance themselves from hair metal and 80s arena rock, which was perfectly understandable.

Aside from Rage Against The Machine and System Of A Down it's a decent enough list.

I don't like Taylor, but Slipknot have their own identity. That's undeniable at this point. Stone Sour, on the other hand, just sound like a bland amalgam of all the post-grunge and alt metal bands that Taylor digs.

It's a pretty good album, but I've always preferred their debut. I guess it seems a little incongruous with the rest of his choices.

I'm surprised that Halford put Korn AND Slipknot in his list, but then perhaps not as he has always liked modernish metal, moreso than his contemporaries.

Neither of those albums are completely disrespectful picks, but I certainly would never put them in my list. Each to their own.

I guess I just find it difficult to fathom how anyone with decades of knowledge of the genre could think Slipknot's debut is one of the greatest metal albums of all time. It almost seems like a rookie's choice. I say almost because the genre has really gone down the toilet so much on a quasi mainstream level that a band like Slipknot seem like geniuses in comparison to whatever is getting around nowadays.

I agree about Slipknot: I've said, to pretty much anyone who cares to listen, that they were really bad for metal. They made it OK to prioritise gimmicks and caveman brutality over song-writing and musical riffs, without ever succeeding in being that heavy. The birth of middle-of-the-road extreme metal.

You look at pretty much every pioneering and successful metal band over the years; whether they be death metal, thrash, heavy metal, doom etc, and they always have a knack of, somehow, making the heaviest of riffs musical. Slipknot set a counterproductive precedent.

Post Re: Strongbow Steve's Random Music Thread
Slipknot had a couple of genuinely intense moments in the late 90's/early 00's, but overall I feel that the heavy- without- really- being - heavy vibe is one of the most prominent features of modern metal which can be found across the different sub genres.

How much Slipknot are responsible for this trend is open to debate, but it is clear that they were the 'gateway band' for many millennial musicians and even younger members of Gen X.

I never understood the hype about them being great songwriters. I listened to all Iowa plenty of times when I bought it and I don't really recall a single song other than a few passages and chants here and there. Their debut had some solid songs, but Iowa just felt like a really desperate attempt by them to prove their 'metal credentials'.

Overall I think a case can be made that they are at least a decent band deserving of some vet respect, especially considering their longevity, which seemed highly unlikely to many in the year 2000, but the idea that they are one of the all-time greats is a serious joke.

Having said that, since I'm not a teenager getting into metal, I really have no idea how they are perceived today by young 'uns going through their discovery period.
