Post To listen or not to listen...
I just added my band to this forum on the selfless promotion pages, and Mo Limits commented that it would be better for me to just add influences rather than Youtube links.

Now Im not complaining. I appreicate the advice and took it on board, but my band is a bit of a crossover between "normal" metal and the more progressive technical type of bands, so pinning down what we sound like could take days. We've been compared to Gojira, but we've also been compared to Motorhead. Not exactly bed fellows...

The thing I find surprising is that this forum of all places needs such guidelines. isnt this the last bastion of extreme music in al its forms? Arent the people who come here well versed in the multitude of genres and styles that go to make up the modern metal scene? Do these people really need to be told "we sound like x"?

I'm curious. how do you discover music? If for no other reason that it may help me market my band better, do you bother listening to new artists? do you go out of your way to find them?

Mo is right. It's pretty much impossible to sound 100% totally original. and the bands that sound the most original are generally the ones that have been around for a while too.

Even Meshuggah, who are one of the most original metal bands ever, took a few albums to really lock into their own definitive sound

Exactly. It's better to post a link to your music and encourage people to check your band out rather than try and describe your music using the correct buzz words that are cool at the time of writing, or any of the "if you like so-and-so" bullshit.

Isn't that the exact opposite though of what Mo and Stat-Rad were saying? I would go for just including both videos to listen to and in the thread name an approximate description of the genre?

Suggesting bands that influence you is a sensible way to promote, but you obviously need a tune that people can listen to immediately if they so wish to.

If I see 'for fans of Pantera, Machine Head and Slayer', then whilst I like some of those bands' songs, I can almost guarantee that I'll dislike the band. If it says Kyuss, Monster Magnet and Paramore, then I'm more likely to listen and probably to like it. Simple.

To be fair, although he is being a little pretentious about what his band may sound like i honestly think he asked valid questions and didn't really need to have the piss taken.
I'm pretty sure it has been said on here that Kerrang's review policy of putting"For fans of X,Y and Z"is for idiots so i would say to people-go for the links, give a short description"we are a power/thrash/doom/whatever band from London/Manchester/Wherever-hope you like it"something like that.

You sound more like AKBAR 48 meets Raging Speedhorn.

This came out of me just asking roughly what his band sounded like.

He has the impression that his band are beyond description by genre or their influences.

He also has the impression that we should all be compelled to listen to his band because this is a forum of a metal magazine.

I'd say it's pretty fair to tale the piss when he starts a thread complaining about music consumption in general over a couple of comments I made.

I honestly didn't read his post like that at all-he shouldn't have been so precious about what they sounded like but i think the other stuff was fair do's.It could come across as a bit snidey i suppose but i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt on that one.
Maybe hovel this anyway though.

Little does he suspect we listen to Miles Davis, Divine Comedy and Japanese prepubescent girl pop music.

A few reference points and a link to a song or 2 are essential if you want more than a couple of people to listen to your band. Being smug and pretentious about it isn't the way to go.

Fuck it, hovel.
