I will almost give you that but i think it was more to do with not wanting to do another RIB, which to be fair was a near impossibility.

The melodic parts are fantastic, and that variation was essential if they were ever going to continue at any level of success, creatively or in terms of sales. Another RIB would have killed them, given the regard that album is held in - any attempt to replicate it would have failed and lost them a considerable amount of respect and/or fans, and thus sales.

Their guitar tone is fucking fearsome on this album, the best they've ever had. The first chords in the title track, the closing chords on Spill The Blood, bracketing the album perfectly in a wash of evil. The first chord sequence in Mandatory Suicide is fucking crushing, and just that few seconds pisses on anything they'd ever produced. The intro to Live Undead, mournful yet threatening.

Nothing wrong with his vocals - in fact, he plays to his limitations by not going for the high notes in Dissident Aggressor, leaving them for the guitar - despite previously proving that he could do it on plenty of Show No Mercy tracks.

Singling out the most 'Reign-y' tracks as being the best ones, they're not of course. Every track on this album is a winner, every one. Even the cover, which does that rare job of outclassing the original, fits in nicely and sets up the closing of the album superbly.

Fuck RIB, it's this album that set their standards. Aggressive, melodic, mature. Perfect.

I love Tom's vocals on "South Of Heaven". They're definitely a bit different from his earlier material but they suit the music perfectly. To say that he can't really sing in that style is absurd. Also, saying that the album was an attempt to sell out in some way is crazy. It's not like there were obvious singles or ballads or something. The slower songs like "Mandatory Suicide" & "Spill The Blood" are some of the darkest & most eerie sounding of their career. The riffs & melodies are pure genius. And why would they even feel the need to sell out when they had just picked up a huge underground following off the back of the most brutal & extreme album ever recorded to that time!! This is my second favourite Slayer album & would probably be in my top ten metal albums ever.

The cover to go first.

The album itself is 4 Fists.

My first concert was slayer on the SOH tour, mind blowing, i LOVE that album. Basically any album that has the line 'Bastard sons begot your cunting daughters'.

I think Charlotte Church's first album began with the same lyric, didn't it?

This would probably have been true.

I understand why you might prefer this over RIB, but not to think RIB is a 5 fist album is a bit mad.

It's a 3/5 album. Just a warm up for the main event.

It was pretty intense warm-up then. I'm surprised they even had the energy for the main event after a warm-up like that.
