I think SOH has a perfect production job TBH, but SITA's sound is a bit 'fuller', to my ears. More bass in the mix, especially in the guitars.

Agreed. Absolutely one of my most hated songs ever. Awful. Born Of Fire is the best song here. Crappy album and the beginning of the decline.

2/5 tops.

4/5, clearly. One of their (joint second) best ones.

It's the fuller sound I like. If either of the previous albums to Seasons had a bigger sound I think they'd be better.

I also think their output after Divine has suffered massively due to Rubin's shitty production with them. Diablos is arse, but God Hates is a fantastic album, but it just sounds wimpy. Both Christ Illusion and World Painted, if they had the overall sound and production of Deicide's Stench of Redemption, for example, they'd sound amazing.

South Of Heaven's guitar sound is way, way better than Seasons though.

Brilliant lyrics. "Snap the tongue in groove discharge to make my HALLOWED POINT!" And the lead riff on the title track is one of doom's finest. Tom's voice is much better here.

Defiinitely agree about the guitar. The snare sound is also incredible, both on SOH and SITA. Nasty as fuck, both of them really jump out. Divine Intervention sounded a bit on the 'thin' side to me, especially after Seasons.... Not bad as such, just... lesser. I've got very little interest in the subsequent albums TBH, I rarely listen to any of them and have only heard WPB twice, so their sound hasn't really made enough of an impression on me for me to comment on it.

Divine for me was my entry album, as that's when I got into them. I think I bought Seasons, Divine, Decade, and then RIB and SoH, so that's how I got used to Slayer. I love Divine, I think the songs are great and it's the point where the band started pulling into something new. It's just a shame they dropped the ball and that something new was really weak. I love Gemini from Undisputed, and for me they should have carried on with stuff of that level. GHUA is the last album I can put on for fun. The last two, whilst I like some of the songs, I almost always just put an early one on instead. Shame, Slayer should have been one those bands that were just, like, fuuuuuuuuuck!

For me it was SOH, SNM, HA, LU, RIB and from then on it was as they were released. At every stage of that, SOH has always been their one perfect album - not just because it was the first one I heard, but it just has all of the elements that make them what they are. Vicious sound, the best tunes/songs, the shock value that appealed to me as a snotty teen, variation in pace and style. Never bettered or even equalled.

The stuff before RIB is so good because it's brilliant, but they weren't quite yet SLAAAAAAYEEEER!!!!!!!! There's a point where they went more into legend than Metallica did, but they did it in a fanatical way.

There aren't many bands that change music like they did whilst also being that band you were obsessed with as a kid. Slayer very much went from being great to being SLAAAAAAYEEEER!!!!!!!! in a few years, whereas Metallica blew up over what is, pretty much, a standard rock/metal album.

They were never 'SLAAAAAAYEEEER!!!!!!!!' for me, though. They were a band I liked A LOT, but I can't say I was ever obsessed by them in the way that I was about Metallica, who I always preferred. Up to and including the s/t, I was hugely into Metallica, to the extent that they would have rivalled Maiden as my favourite band. Now, I'd put them on a level as both have great albums that I still love and enjoy regularly, and shit albums that I never need to hear again. Having said that, Metallica are at both ends of the spectrum (the mixed list I can't be bothered actually putting together), as Slayer have never released an album as good as Ride The Lightning or as poor as St. Anger.

Slayer really got me in a way that Metallica didn't. As much as I liked, as a kid, all the early albums of both bands, Slayer were always the one that really grabbed me.

A bit of my interest in body art stems from Slayer as I saw the clip in Live Intrusion where the guy has 'Slayer' cut into his arm.

I cut 'Slayer' into my forearm when I was about 13, and it wasn't in an emo sense, it was in a 'SLAAAAAAYEEEER!!!!!!!!' sense. If I'd been old enough Id have had their logo tattooed, but I stopped being that way enclined once I went passed 18 (having had a couple of Maiden tatts).

Slayer appeal to a slightly feral side of me.

I'm a big fan of some of the more 'forgotten' tunes on this record - Skeletons, Temptation and Born of Fire. Skeletons has a great off kilter vibe - love the lyrics in Temptation and Born Of Fire is an absolute shredder - short and to the point - with top notch Satan references.

The only thing I don't like about that song is the 'child's'* voice at the end. Fucking irritating. Immense song, though.

*Is it actually a kid's voice? It sounds more like Araya's sped up or pitch shifted or with whatever effect would do that applied. Especially the scream at the end.

The live version of Decade shows what the song could have been like without the voice atthe end. Clearly signifcantly better. That childs voice is just a joke

The kid's voice was a strange choice in general, seeing as Gein didn't kill children. I prefer the live versions of Dead Skin, but it's still a pretty solid song on the record.

War Ensemble should win just because of the way Tom introduces it live!

"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRR ENSAAAAAAAAMBLE!!!!!!!!!"

Hair standing up on back of neck, every time.
