LosT Paradise isn't all that well loved anymore. On the T board it is, perhaps, but generally speaking, most fans don't rate it. I read somewhere that it is 'universally hated', which is obviously not true, since old doom/death fans like it, but that's where its appeal lies primarily.
Some more [not so new but ok] news about upcoming album:
Quote:
Gregor Mackintosh (lead guitar): "We are currently holed up in The Chapel studios in Lincolnshire, England recording our new album which is entitled 'Tragic Idol'. The album will again be produced by Jens Bogren and is influenced by classic doom metal and classic metal. I would say it is more melodic than the last record whilst retaining the heaviness. There are lots of guitar solos and melodies. The album will contain such track titles as 'Honesty in Death', 'Theories from Another World', 'In this We Dwell' and the title track 'Tragic Idol'."

Turn Loose the Swans is a stunning album, no wonder they could never follow it. P.Lost never really (to these ears at least) had that one stunning album, that Reign in Blood which fucked them in the ass forever. So their albums are up and down, some very good, some not so. But they haven't made any shit albums either. Overall a best of Paradise Lost would piss on a best of MDB, but TLTS is the best album either of those two have made.
Except maybe for Host.

haha
Fecking internet... did you quote me to him on a PL forum or something? Git
Anyway, my "source" was the producer of Shades of God, Icon and Draconian Times (Simon Efemey), so I stand by the original comment (and I was talking about his live singing 15 years ago!), but would prefer you didn't repeat where I heard about it back to Nick Holmes please.

yeah but anyone with a functioning pair of eyes can work out that Nick isn't the best singer hahah.
In fact, i think that Nick Holmes and Burton C Bell are the classic metal examples that demonstrate the limits of vocal production. Of course back in those days the technology was even less sophisticated than it is now, but you can tell with Nick that he is struggling to reach those notes, and that's why he can't reproduce them consistently in a live environment. and what's even more strange to me is that his vocal performance on 'Host' and 'Believe In Nothing' is a step down from 'One Second'. You can hear his voice 'tremble' on those records at times. Like he isn't sure what he is doing. or maybe the producer just took the wrong take. maybe it was a deliberate sabotage job by EMI because they knew they had backed the wrong horse
seriously though, Burton C Bell is roughly in the same boat as Holmes as far as i'm concerned.
yes. The most hard in point of recording vocals PL album is Draconian Times. Nick spend plenty much time in studio when perform Forever Failure or Hallowed land, because it's not easy to sing songs like that in his style and temp of other elements of song. The most important thing when you singing it take right notes in right time, as i think. And Nick got this feeling.

Burton C Bell is a poor vocalist, a shit lyricist and a holocaustically bad "philosopher". Anyone remeber his "though pieces" in MH, they were every bit as embarassing as that obese twat Dino's porn fixation.

I think his ideas are better than his execution of them. and his concepts were good in the 90's, at least for a metal band of that type anyway, even if he was just riffing on Orwell, Huxley and Gibson.
F.F did influence some of the worst metal out there though.
TRAGIC: i like his vocals on Draconian Times too. was just listening to 'Once Solemn' earlier. killer song!

Agree. they closest they came was probably 'Icon', and that was close but no cigar. No 5 fists for P.L. I can accept that they released at least 2-3 albums that are 4.5 fists. and quite a few 4's too, but nothing truly definitive(although P.L's sound on Icon and D.T was definitive as far as gothic metal was concerned, even if the albums weren't perfect themselves)
'Host' was a pretty good album but it wasn't a game changer. it had zero impact. It was daring for a metal band to record an album like that, no doubt, but once you step into that arena you will be compared to those making similar music to yourself, and the consensus is that P.L largely failed to measure up.
'Gothic', 'Icon' and 'Draconian Times', on the other, were quite influential, within the field of metal, so that's why they count for more.

MDB: TLTS and Angel are 5 fisters, The Darkest Hour and Songs of Darkness possibly as well, the rest, baring Evinta are all 4 to 4.5 fists.
PL: Draconian, OS and Icon are 4, SoG is 3.5, Gothic 3, the rest 2.5 or less., they aren't shit just very dull.
Anathema: A4 and Judgement are possible 5 fisters, Eternity is 3/4, ND is 3, not heard the two most recent. SE is the only Darren era I've heard and I'd say it's a 4, on one listen years ago and one now.

Re: PARADISE LOST
Eternity is a possible 5 fist? I always thought that was an interesting transitional album, but nowhere near great. Alt 4 didnt' stand up for me over time. I'd give Judgement a low 4.5 perhaps.

Edited to Judgement. I'm wary of giving any Anathema, there are probably 4.5s or even 4s.
