1985 - Maiden release 'Live After Death', the most fawned over and overrated live album since 'Alive'

2006 - And then it all goes horribly wrong, A Matter of Life and Death divides opinion, with the right minded people among us holding it up as the drivelly toss it is, while some people (Richie HR for example) hailing it as a masterpiece. Which it isn't.

2010 - Another terrible album cover and possibly the most dreary, dull and just plain boring Maiden album to date, not helped by an intro that even UDO would dismiss as too cheesy. But still, Maiden fly the world playing to an estimated 296 million people every night. You can't argue with those ticket sales, they must be better than ever, huh?

Mali deals one or two facts amidst the dross.

It's Shallow. He's as wrong about Maiden as he is about Sabbath.

Quite obviously. Nos. 12-15 are theoretical, of course, as Iron Maiden had split between 1989 and 1999.

Post Re: The Iron Maiden thread
I think I like Maiden best with Clive Burr behind the kit. I don't mean to say he's better, it's just what he plays seems to fit more to me.
I also think I prefer Paul to Bruce.

So it's perhaps puzzling that my favourite album is Somewhere in Time

I prefer Burr's playing, too but Bruce > D'ianno, no question.

AMOLAD ismy favourite album. I listened to the 80s and 90s ones to death in my teens, so I generally only play the ones from the last decade now.

Bruce's voice is a lot better nowadays too. Some of the early stuff is verging on shouting a bit, I was quite surprised watching Live After Death again quite how rough he starts off Aces High.

Aye that date was at the end of an 18 month tour, his voice on flight 666 is way better.

Also piece of mind is better than powerslave.

No it fucking isn't, what's wrong with you? The worst of the 80s albums, by far. 3 or 4 songs that are up to the standard they'd set (and followed it up with), the rest range from OK at best to downright poor. Add it to the worst production job they've had on a studio album to date and you've got a dud. Give me The Trooper, Revelations, Where Eagles Dare and Flight Of Icarus and the rest can fuck off.

I actually LOVE the production on POM, think powerslave is massively overrated due to the fact it has such a good 1-2.
How you can say its their worst 80's album is beyond me.

I say it because it is, quite obviously. It's got a really thin, limp sound to it. No power whatsoever, fuck all bass, it just sounds too... slick, I suppose. Quest For Fire: instant -1 for that song alone and Die With Your Boots on is almost as bad.

Powerslave is a stormer of an album, overrated my arse. Yes, the 1-2 of Aces High and 2 Minutes To Midnight is one of the best opening pairs there is, but the title track, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner and The Duellists are just as good. The title track, when it smashes in after the intro and drum roll - possibly the most metal moment of their career. Powerslave pisses on Piece Of Mind which was, until No Prayer..., their worst album thus far.

On the Maiden records perhaps, but he sounded better on Chemical Wedding.

SIT IS better than POM!

is Bruce's excellent vocal performance on Chemical Wedding partly due to the use of 7string/downtuning on the guitars for that record?

A brief history of Iron Maiden.

1976 - 1981 Paul DiAnno and the boys build the foundations of one of the world's biggest ever bands.

1981 - 1984 DiAnno is replaced by Bruce 'Air Raid Siren' Dickinson and produce a string of classic albums.

1985 - Maiden release 'Live After Death', the most fawned over and overrated live album since 'Alive' (Alive II pisses on it).

1986 - Maiden return with their weakest album to date, although in the light of what is to come it will retrospectively be reassessed as the last great Maiden album.

1988 - Maiden release their first (but not last) shit single, which promptly hits the charts and somehow propels them further than ever into the mainstream. Maiden headline Donington for the first time, helpfully using Kiss (at their worst) to disguise the fact that they aren't as good as they used to be.

1989 - Oh dear oh dear oh dear. Not only is the new album weak as piss, the artwork and production are an embarrassment for a band of this stature.

1990 - Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter confirms that Maiden really have lost the fucking plot.

1992 - Another turgid disappointment of an album and a second Donington appearance, their first with annoying whirling buffoon Janick Gers in tow.

1993 - Bruce realises (a bit late) the ship is sinking and bails, leaving Harris to hunker down and steer the wounded ship Tony Iommi style through the 90's. Two awful albums follow before Blaze is jettisoned back to obscurity and Bruce (and Adrian) rejoin for a Kiss style payday bankarolla.

2000 - Maiden release their first new album with Bruce in 8 years, and shockingly it's actually their best since 1986! Way to go boys.

2003 - Despite a laughably shit cover, Dance of Death turns out okay too. Maiden continue to play to HUGE crowds the world over.

I'm not so familiar with everything they released after Seventh Son, but from the horrible bits I've heard I've got to agree with the spirit of Mali's post. In Maiden's defense, and credit to you lot, I have been listening to the old stuff again recently and I still quite like everything up to Seventh Son, except the lyrics from Quest for Fire, which are stupid and I knew it when I was 11.

Important band in my musical taste development - not much to offer me these days.

Maiden are naff in a really lame way that isn't even remotely 'cool', even on an ironic level. Don't get me wrong, i enjoy the music and what have you, but the cover art, the whole Eddie mascot thing etc; it just hasn't aged well.

For me personally, Manowar and Priest still sound great, but Maiden have lost their edge, except for Dianno years, and the more serious they get, the harder it is to take. Matter of Life and Death is a case in point. What's the point of writing all these 'serious' songs about war only to wrap them up in a crude package with a bunch of eddies on tanks? It's fucking retarded.

The whole Eddie thing is played out beyond belief at this point.

Powerslave was one of the first metal albums I ever heard, its a great heavy metal album with well thought out melodic hooks and Dickinson's great vocals. Not much else to say about this band other than I love Powerslave and Somewhere in time, they don't grab me like Judas Priest does.
