 Re: Metallica vs. Slayer
Although I think that Metallica was probably the second most important metal band of all time (after Black Sabbath) I have no choice but to vote for Slayer as they're my favourite metal band ever. Nothing beats "Reign In Blood". NOTHING!!

It's not a fucking controversial metaphor and not worth the over-reaction. Everybody knows that Metallica is super rich and popular - whether you like them or not. It was just a statement of empathy for those annoyed with this fact, that's all.

Steev, you have proved once again just how bad your taste in music truly is.

Shall I wipe the entire forum so everyone can start again? Could you? The question to register should be Metallica or slayer? That should sort the wheat from the chaff.

 Re: Metallica vs. Slayer
Didn't bother to read past about page 2.
I would vote for Metallica, mainly out of sentimentality I guess. Without them (and Guns N' Roses) I probably wouldn't have gotten into heavy metal (keep in mind these two bands were the commercial side of metal circa '90-'91), so I guess because they came before Slayer for me (although Slayer wasn't long after, but I had everything up to the Black Album prior to having any Slayer) they exposed a lot of firsts for me.
In saying that, if I were to answer what is the quintessential metal album, I would probably go with 'Reign In Blood' (with maybe 'Paranoid' close behind).

 Re: Metallica vs. Slayer
I would rather go on a drinking binge with Metallica than Slayer. Lars and Kirk only. Jaymz don't drink and Rob is just a hired frogwalker unless he wants to give me some gossip on Mike Muir. Drinking with Kerry King I'd imagine would mean begging the bouncers not to kick the baldy cunt out.

 Re: Metallica vs. Slayer
I'd rather go for a Beer with the Pope than Metallica, at least you'd get bummed after a few drinks with the Pope rather than a headache after 2 minutes listening to those whiny wankers.

 Re: Metallica vs. Slayer
It was all over for me when Metallica released their Black Album, and instead of regressing to their thrashier roots they grew even more commercially accessible. If they'd moved back to the Justice, Puppets, Lightning style in the later 90s they could have saved themselves, but alas! The first five Slayer LPs are practically faultless and whilst their post 1990 material doesn't stand up to the first run at least they stayed vaguely true to their original form. Slayer.

 Re: Metallica vs. Slayer
both bands are judged based on their golden eras, ie first five.
Metallica of the 80s is my favorite band. Slayer used to be my second favorite. There you go.
