Seen the pics of the reconstruction buildings at the new Stonehenge visitor centre?

I helped build the model and the house that they took guidance off.

Don't have pics online of the final building, but it was pretty huge.

I also made a replica prehistoric ard (earlier than a plough).

The bowl and model house are both lovely.
What wood did you use Cunty? Presumably made on a power laithe.....
Here's a plinth I made for a cob oven. It doesn't look level because I'm a shit photographer.

Is it the angle of the camera or is it sloping?

the bowl is made from yew which is a very strange wood to work with, itis a softwood but can have some mentally hard bits in it. I have snapped the ends of carbon steel tools before when working with it so making this bowl was a pleasant surprise.

yes I used a power lathe, no bloody way would you catch me using a pole lathe (unless my dream of worldwide tech/electric/ petro chemical failure comes true).

so what is a cob oven ? is it one of those domed things the Turks use? Greeks too if I remember .

I'm off into the mancave to try make another one :)

such a cool thing to be involved in! and the proto plough, did you go full neolithic and only use stone tools for the manufacturing of it? I always wonder at that when I see recreations of old stuff.
Having been around woodwork my whole life and watching my old man successfully fool many experts including christies auction house with his 'new' old stuff...well there are some things that make a lot of sense and others that seem a bit silly.

tool marks from machines are obviously a give away so processing the tree to timber using hand tools appropriate to the time frame would be very important but here is my problem;

carpentry skills and handtool skills take practice, knowledge of how to select the best bits of timber to lessen the hacking it into shape? that takes a lot of knowledge, who knows how to use copper alloy tools? who knows how to use flint tools?

to recreate a replica one must recreate the worker in my opinion but then I guess these issues are why it is called experimental archealogy.

interestingly my old man had a great way of sidestepping a lot of these issues, he used to rescue very fucked old furniture which he would break up into bits, he would very carefully reuse all the old nails and timber to make smaller pieces, any actual woodwork he did would be by hand and using old tools so then to really finish them off he would either let it get all dusty and cobwebby or if it was oak he would bury it in horseshit for a while.

amonia in the shit stains the oak in a very similar way that several hundred years of old house soot, wear and tear would.

candle boxes were his speciality but also heavily carved blanket boxes complete with date.

we sold his last one when I was about 12 to a local antique dealer who was desperately trying to remain calm, we thought he had sussed it when he said the date was probably made up...then he said " probably predated by a few years when it was made to make it seem older....he was only partly wrong! haha made in the 70s dated the 1680s! haha!

Cob ovens are made from clay, perhaps with some plant material mixd in. You light a fire in them to heat them up, some times you'd sweep them out, sometimes not, then cook inside.

The slab on the top is level, wonky camera angle and optical illusion from the flagstones make it look odd. The fence line is horizontal.

Isn't Yew posionous? I wouldn't want to eat from a yew bowl.

yup! every bit of yew except the bright red berry flesh is poisionous. i made the bowl because I could and because it has pretty grain so actual usage is secondary really. I am making the next one out of an old oak banaster rail so if it works it will be food safe. pics to follow

from start to finish, by finish I mean when it flew off the lathe and knocked lots of things off a shelf.

Oak is harder than yew it seems

attempt two . I will make something pretty out of this bit of wood eventually.

for now this is a prototype. could easily punt in a little rebate for a lid but making a lid requires some form of precision which is a whole other skill.
