 Re: Issue 251
I've not time to list the full thing now so I'll finish it later, but the top 5 are
1. Mastadon - Leviathan 2. Cult of Luna - The Beyond 3. Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters 4. Electric Wizard - Dopethrone 5. Meshuggah - Catch Thirtythree
Though it does say 'most important' rather than best, for all the difference that that makes.
edit:
6. Opeth - Blackwater Park 7. Decapitated - Winds of Creation 8. Gojira - From Mars to Sirus 9. Isis - Panopticon 10. Lamb of God - New American Gospel 11. Converge - Jane Doe 12. Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice 13. Pig Destroyer - Prowler In The Yard 14. Enslaved - Mardraum - Beyond the Within 15. Slipknot - Iowa 16. Alter of Plagues - Mammal 17. Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones 18. Cobalt - Gin 19. Watain - Lawless Darkness 20. Slayer - God Hates Us All 21. Celtic Frost - Monotheist 22. Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon 23. Behemoth - The Satanist 24. Nile - Black Seeds of Vengeance 25. Ghost - Opus Eponymous 26. Testament - The Formation of Damnation 27. Dragonforce - Inhuman Rampage 28. Wormrot - Dirge 29. Drudkh - Forgotten Legends 30. Insect Warfare - World Extermination 31. The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine 32. Nasum - Human 2.0 33. Sunn 0))) - Monoliths And Dimensions 34. Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory 35. Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro 36. Municipal Waste - The Art of Partying 37. Repugnant - The Epitome Of Darkness 38. Wintersun - Wintersun 39. Killswitch Engage - Alive or Just Breathing 40. Akercocke - Choronzon
Bit of an iffy list if you ask me. There a few definitely look like token gestures to make the list appear more rounded. Wintersun for the folk metal fans, Rhapsody for the Power Metal fans, and Drudkh for the fans of more Atmospheric black metal.

 Re: Issue 251
Thanks Anni
So it is most important huh? Then how the fuck does Cult of Luna get the number 2 slot? As good as they are they are nothing more than Neurosis clones and speaking of Neurosis, where is Eye of Every Storm?
and this is the same magazine that proclaimed Monotheist as album of the decade yet put it at number 21, below Triptykon. WTF?
I'd love to see the justification for GHUA, but it seems like they are baiting the readership with that, trying too hard to be unconventional.
As you say, a dodgy list in a lot of places but some that i would agree with (DsO, Pig Destroyer, Converge, Gojira) and others that whilst nice to see on the list, the albums chosen should be different

The COL made me raise my eyebrows too, Axis of Perdition aught to be there.

 Re: Issue 251
Jane Doe isn't at number 2 so the whole list is invalid.

Leviathan has no business being #1.

Dear jaysus how fickle these lists are.
An album is in vogue in lists, then out, then back in again.
Fuck music journalism really.

I do like (and own) that Insect Warfare but would not list it as an important release of the decade.

 Re: Issue 251
I've only just got this. 'Most important' differs from 'best' inasmuch as as it allows things like Iowa and Lamb Of God to be chosen over better albums that didn't have such a big 'impact' on 'the scene', and I would say Primordial presage all this British Isles 'heritage black metal' that's causing such a stir nowadays, and there's four albums to choose from, but mostly I was just delighted to see Dawn Of Victory in there.
Brought back some memories as I remember Dopethrone and Blackwater Park were two of my first assignments for Tegs and it was ever so exciting. I have a tape somewhere of the Oborn/Bagshot/Greening line-up chatting in a park in 2000. I remember Tim saying his favourite bands were Nirvana and Burning Witch, and that's what Electric Wizard sounded like.

 Re: Issue 251
Hey, so what about that anti-homophobia article that seemed to be written by Willem Dafoe's character from Boondock Saints?
