Granted, I've only watched a couple of episodes, and the story itself was pretty good, but I think I've been spoiled by Game of Thrones. Does Vikings get any more graphic? Not as far as I've seen. They completely pussied out with the blood eagle scene and as I've mentioned before, the battle scenes aren't particularly well done. The producers obviously don't have the budget of Game Of Thrones but it's really a case of 'this should be a lot better than it is'...

If you buy the Blu-rays, there's more graphic content. There's a throat cutting sequence which was removed, but it's mainly nudity tbf. NWS VIKINGS TITSTV version Blu ray version Bonus tits.

We get the uncut versions on Irish TV. Canada too, if you're looking for torrents or whatever.

I've just watched the first episode of Series 1. Seems ok, will stick with it.

Re: The TV Thread.
Finished Stranger Things last night. Set in 1983, a gang of schoolkids try to track down their friend after he disappears one night. Monsters, telekinesis, and shady government agencies. Think E.T, The Goonies, Super 8, and The Monster Squad if they were written by Stephen King and Dean Koontz. From the opening credits sequence with its distinctive '80s vibe (a perfectly chosen typeface, video quality picture and crackle) to the songs included on the soundtrack and its John Carpenter style synth score, there was genuine authenticity to the era (only ever resorting to a handful of deliberate "look at this - it's a thing you'd forgotten about the '80s" moments). The best thing about it though were the characters. The Sheriff was excellent, Winona Ryder improved as the show went on, eventually giving one of her stronger performances, and the kids were fantastic. All of them. Even the bullies. The teenage side of the story bogged things down a little in places, but not by much, and the only (slight) disappointment was the rather one dimensional bad guy (Matthew Modine looking like David Cronenberg with beefy sideburns). Neither creepy nor dark enough, his was the only underdeveloped and slightly disappointing character in the show
although, even though it looked like he met his fate, it was done so he could quite easily make a return in a second season.
I was really impressed by the ending too. I've read some reviews saying it was weak but I think they must have been watching a different show. In short - watch it. It's great.

Re: The TV Thread.
I'm looking forward to watching Stranger Things, glad it sounds like it lived up to its promise.
I finished Jessica Jones the other night, thank christ. Didn't like it at all, too bloody miserable for my tastes but I stuck with it in case there was any crossover with Daredevil.

Re: The TV Thread.
The plan was to watch the first episode of Stranger Things before bed, just to get an idea of how it was. Of course, I'm now five episodes in. Just as good as Spiny said, I couldn't add much to his description (I'd mention It, Stand By Me and even From A Buick 8 as King touchstones and maybe add Lonnie to the one-dimensional character list - though he's not in it much, as it turns out), pretty much spot on. Looking forward to finishing it tomorrow night. If I can wait that long.
Edit: Nah, I couldn't wait. And neither should you. Just finished it, great series.

Completed Series 1 of Vikings.
It seems ok, not as good as Game Of Thrones though. Not too arsed about the battle scenes looking too scrappy as I guess that was probably how vikings fought. It didn't take too long for Ragnar to turn into a cock-end though.

Stranger Things sounds like it would be right up my street, will give it a watch after I've plowed through Six Feet Under

Re: The TV Thread.
It just looked very 80s Speilberg and Stephen King tales of youth stuff.
Might give Six Feet Under a break once I've finished Season 2 then. Been meaning to finish Boardwalk Empire.

I enjoyed it as the exercise in nostalgia it is.

Black Sails.
Prequel to Treasure Island which incorporates fictionalised versions of well known pirates.
The first episode is a bit slow, hopefully it'll pick up.

Re: The TV Thread.
I'm currently a couple of episodes into series 4 of Vikings (is there gonna be a season 5, does anyone know?). I'll probably start Stranger Things once I'm done with that, but I've also started re-watching HBO's Rome from the beginning and that's probably my favourite TV show ever so it's distracting.

Re: The TV Thread.
I'm watching reruns of The Tripods now. It's like War Of The World's but with less heat rays and red weed, and more emotional repression and mind control.
