Re: Neurosis Fires Within Fires (official thread)...
I quite liked that when I first clicked on it a couple days ago. It sent me through their discog, minus the first two (I still have a couple more to get through). I've tried several times with Neurosis, and I think they're starting to click. I've never been able to make it past TSiB before. As most know, they're a lot to take in at first, but there has been quite enough to keep me interested, and even make me want to go back through their stuff down the road. Anyway, thanks Robit for posting that. Oh yeah, I'm really looking forward to their new release.

Re: Neurosis Fires Within Fires (official thread)...
So, I have listened to the album quite a number of times now and agree with FMV that it is lean, I wouldn't say short, i think it is about 35-40 mins with the shortest song at 7mins and the longest at 10.
It cuts a lot of the meandering crap out and the build-up so to my ears at least is a more aggressive offering.
But, always a but, it hasn't really clicked with me yet. I suspect it will go the same way as the last one in that I will listen to it alot then simply stop and it becomes filed away

I feel that way about most older bands nowadays, especially My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and a few others. I have little desire to return to their 'new' albums after the first month or so of release, but I like having easy access to them whenever the urge arises.

I think it's the best thing they've done since eye of every storm.

Re: Neurosis Fires Within Fires (official thread)...
It's early days yet, but I would definitely agree that it's their best album since 2004. It certainly feels like it has more scope than their last three albums despite its short length which, as others have pointed out, totally works in its favor.
Neurosis are still a force to be reckoned with, even after all these years, and I must admit that after re-listening to it last night, I'm pretty damn pleased and even surprised at how good it is.

Never been a fan but I thought I'd give it a go with an open mind.
I'm still not a fan.

If you were destined to connect with their music Spiny, it would have happened a long time ago!

http://loudwire.com/neurosis-albums-ranked/A list because we love lists! Around what I would expect, but surely 'Through Silver In Blood' is the most essential? (TBH, I don't rate 'Times of Grace' that highly).

It's decidedly average.
1. Enemy Of The Sun 2. Through Silver In Blood 3. Souls At Zero 4. Sovereign (EP, I know)
The rest.

Re: Neurosis Fires Within Fires (official thread)...
I think FWF is a cracking album, but it's testament to the quality of their output that it still slides a little way down my list:
1. Through Silver in Blood 2. Souls at Zero 3. Enemy of the Sun 4. A Sun That Never Sets 5. The Eye of Every Storm 6. Times of Grace 7. Fires Within Fires 8. Honor Found in Decay 9. Given to the Rising 10. The Word as Law 11. Pain of Mind
Positions 4, 5 and 6 are somewhat interchangeable, depending on my mood.

Pain of Mind This is probably how I would list them too, maybe swap 'A Sun The Never Sets' with 'The Eye of Every Storm' because I favour the experimental mentality and atmosphere on the latter album. 'Souls At Zero' is a personal favourite and probably the Neurosis album I go to the most. I actually listened to it straight after posting that link. At this point they are pretty much fully evolved. 'Fire Within Fires' was a nice summation though without feeling like a total retread/retrospective. (Plus I like the relative brevity of it)

(Plus I like the relative brevity of it) Yeah, I think it's a great album, but I was expecting it to be higher up in my list but, as I said, it's testament to the quality of their output that even an excellent album comes so far down. In all honesty, the top three could also be interchangeable, depending on my mood. EotS has a real sentimental feel for me as it's the first Neurosis album I ever bought, but I also love SaZ. I put TSiB at the top because it pretty much drew a line under the whole sub-genre, before it even began.

Re: Neurosis Fires Within Fires (official thread)...
These ones after Eye Of Every Storm - Honor/Decay, Rising and Fires have all been soooo tame and wet. And boring. They were really, really boring last time I saw them as well.
I like Times Of Grace a lot, I don't know why its so unpopular here. I thought it was a perfect one-two with TSiB. And Sun That Never Sets as well, always under-represented & I was less keen at the time but that has aged v.well IMO. They peaked with TSiB and ToG with me for sure.
