Remember when instrumental post-metal was a thing.

My favourite Type O, even despite the lack of dark humour and sarcasm. I might just be a miserable bastard.

It is definitely their heaviest and most miserable. Great album though, and also probably their most consistent. It contains such a moody atmosphere throughout, and White Slavery is one of the most crushing songs ever.

I do think it still has some of the sarcasm and humor carried over - just not as direct. Skip It, for one. the "Ha Ha" in the "EILD" chorus. In Creepy Green Light, during that 80s sounding synth section, Pete is screaming "Kreite" - the A&R guy at Road Runner Records. Reciting Pi to 9 digits on Who Will Save the Sane. And of course, the Beatles medley - ironically ending the album on a somewhat positive note.

No doubt Chris, I was talking more in relative terms. It is certainly a far cry from ‘My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend’.

^^WCD is a cool album, but I was initially disappointed. It's easy to see why it didn't sell well, but White Slavery is a Type O classic.

^^Still sounds really good to me, unlike many other black metal albums from the mid 90's. I get that people who discovered them with Tara find this kind of dull, but it has a very special atmosphere that sounds beamed in from another dimension, whereas on Tara they just sound like a super charged, high tech black thrash band.

Dismissing it as an early 'formative' release is lazy thinking, and aspects of this sound were brought back on their 2009 self titled release when Proscriptor made the wise decision to bridge the gap between the old and 'new' styles.
