This is a classic case of damned if you do and damned if you dont. I can certainly see why some bands choose to experiment or change after a certain number of years.

Although it usually isn't planned, it often comes off like a strategic move. You give the fans something different to make them love what you originally offered more. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, you don't truly appreciate what you have until it's gone etc etc. That kind of thing.

The danger in straying from your original style for too long is that you can really alienate your fanbase to the point of no return, or it can take you a while to find your feet again. e.g Paradise Lost

I agree, and I'm not saying either way is the right way or wrong way. The problem with finding a formula and sticking to it is the "familiarity breeds contempt" thing: When bands seemingly hit a formula I find buying every other album to be a good way of not getting bored. I find this works with Clutch.

Superb month tbf. Some real return to form surprises from Bodom, Queensryche, and In Flames.
Plus the new Manowar EP came out. Which was nice.

JAN:
1. Flotsam and Jetsam - The End of Chaos
2. Soilwork - Verkligheten
3. Altarage - The Approaching Roar

FEB:
1. Beast in Black - From Hell With Love
2. Overkill - Wings of War
3. Within Temptation - Resist
4. Rhapsody - The Eighth Mountain

QR was a return to form? Do you really think it's that much better than the last album? I reckon it's level, maybe a little better or worse, but certainly not substantially so.

In Flames lost me 15 years ago.

Big improvement on the last QR for me. I got bored of the last one fairly quickly, but I'm still listening to the new one.

In Flames started going seriously downhill with Soundtrack to Your Escape (although some fans had already dumped them after Reroute...). Popular album but all the touring with Slipknot was clearly rubbing off on them.

People seemed to love Come Clarity too, but I thought it was a total mess with only a couple of quality songs.

In fact, with the exception of Sounds of a Playground Fading, everything else they've done up until ...Mask has been absolute shit, and they've been utter bollocks live too.

That said, I don't think this is another case of "they've been shit for so long, anything sounds good". ITM is a genuinely good (if not even remotely death metal) record.

I got sick of In Flames sometime between Colony and Clayman. I didn't actually buy Clayman, but I picked up Reroute To Remain because I was curious about their new direction. It wasn't a bad album, but after that I just couldn't be arsed with them. So yeah, I guess S.T.Y.E was the official exist point for me like it was for many other fans. That album introduced them to a whole new market though.

That Playground one was touted as a return to form, but it sounded pretty average to me.

Just realised they have released 3 albums since Playground. Bloody hell! Doesn't seem like that long ago that it was released!

I forget, which version of Queensryche is that?

^^The one without Tate. His band is called Operation: Mindcrime.

The colon makes all the difference.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks. I've just listened to "Blood of the Levant" and it's pretty good. La Torre out-Tates Tate.

Superior to modern Tate, yes, but not prime Tate. i.e 1984-1997. Maybe even 99 too. His voice didn't really start showing obvious signs of wear until Tribe, and he still sounded good then.

Wasn't Tate always a little ropey live? I seem to recall criticism of him using backing tracks live and overdubs on live recordings.

Bob Mould's sunshine rock is a great album for this month.
