You really like Dance Of December Souls but not Brave Murder Day. Still checking out your reviews. As for Nuclear Assault I liked them until Something Wicked. The Plague & Trail Of Tears my favorites.

5/5. My (joint) favourite thrash album.

What is your other joint favourite?

I do really enjoy Game Over. I really dig the attitude. As much as people complain about the guitar tone, it’s kinda endearing to me at this point - I’d rather hear it than another late-80s scooped-mid guitar tone - and it leaves space for that sexy bass to gurgle away underneath it all.

Continuing along.

Rust In Peace is the other one.

To me, Game Over defines thrash. One of the first thrash albums I heard, if not the first. Might just be a personal thing, but it's how thrash is supposed to sound for me, tinny production and irritating vocals and all. Survive was also great but I lost interest after that, Handle With Care did nothing for me. All I've heard since then was their last EP, it was terrible.

That’s interesting. I love both those albums, but in a lot of ways they are very different. Don’t know if I could choose a favourite thrash album.

Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium

Still great. A toss up between this and The Carnival Bizarre for my preferred Cathedral album. Nothing too controversial there I’m sure. I do have a soft spot for The Garden of Unearthly Delights. I don’t know how most feel about that album.

^ Great album! It was my introduction to doom metal and I've been hooked on that album ever since. Also working on a review for that one.

NP:

If only the band's later stuff would be as good as this. Aargh!

An old favourite - good clean fun from the more violent, raw, Satanic end of 80s thrash metal. Indebted to Slayer and Darkness Descends-era Dark Angel.

I thought it was pretty dull, Endtyme is the only album post-The Carnival Bizarre that I have any time for, and even that is pretty oppressive in its sound.

Forest is amazing (currently wearing the T-shirt, coincidentally) and The Carnival Bizarre is pretty good, despite the overly wacky vocals and crappy snare sound, but The Ethereal Mirror is their high point for me, no question. The sound is immense (I don't care if they hate it themselves), and the songs are there, from the slow doomy stuff to the more upbeat stuff.

One of the few Dutch doom/death metal albums that I genuinely care about.

Just going back to the t(h)rash talk, these two would definitely be among my favourites. Great all round.

I know Kai Hanson’s singing here is bad, but it’s endearing in its unabashed metal joy.

^ Your comment about that Helloween album is spot on. Kai wasn't technically very good (he's definitely out of tune on ''Heavy Metal is the Law'' from what I remember), but at least he sounds really passionate. Someone like Michael Kiske really doesn't IMO.

I'm not too fond of that Deathrow album, but that Artillery record is alright, even though I don't love it. Seems like a 3.5/5 album.

Fair enough. Just curious though, Colin, with the YouTube videos you put up, are they first listens, return listens, sampling, or just the way you go about listening to music? (A lot of the stuff you put up seems pretty rare, so I can understand that’s the convenient way to hear this stuff). Most of the stuff I put up I own, because I’m obsessive like that, and I’ve heard hundreds of times in most cases. I think i might be at the point of being able to take in a lot of new (to me) material in short time frames.

I’ve always liked this Dio return (was never a fan of the Tony Martin era TBH). This feels a bit like an album out of time, like a natural successor to Mobs Rules. Dio and Appice just slot right back in. Some great highlights that are among both parties best - I’m thinking ‘After All (The Dead)’ and ‘I’ in particular. ‘Letters From Earth’ is also a personal favourite. Don’t know if I can abide that cover though, and I wish they nailed the production better that really emphasised the doomy atmosphere.
