Nevermore are one of those bands that I probably spent too much time listening to between 1997-2001 that I rarely return to them. Meshuggah are another band that fit into that category, although my 'obsession' with them lasted a bit longer, and their last album was a real return to form.

I lost interest after Catch 33. They still do what they do well, but they really haven’t evolved too much (at least for my taste - a lot of other groups have taken their aesthetic and moved it into more creatively fresh directions).

^^Yeah but the end result is not nearly as definitive. Who has explored more on a textural level than them within their style? Catch 33 still sounds pretty out there even today.

The struggle to free themselves from constraints became their very shackles.

I know that this album is (relatively) divisive, but I’ve always really enjoyed it, even in it’s more straightforward approach.

Does anyone here like this band?

Only heard Crystal Logic. This song could have been influenced by them.

People on other sites (metal-archives comes to mind) are crazy about them, but I don't think they're really my kind of band. Certainly unique and all that, but to me they don't riff hard, nor do they have too interesting hooks. The album I'm still listening to seems to be one of their better ones, though. More hard rock than metal, but it sounds very genuine and dare I say emotional.

I really like their mid-80s stuff (my favourite probably being Open The Gates). I’m not really familiar with their latter day material. I can completely understand how they would be an acquired taste though. They tended to have a bit of a psychedelic edge to their sound more so than being a riff heavy band.

This is lazy/hazy Saturday morning listening.

From what I recall, I liked their intent much more than their execution, but who knows, I might dig some of their stuff more now.

Thrash-y riffs, gothic atmosphere...this is definitely interASSting.

I’m guessing it just not your cup of tea then?

You’ve inspired me anyway.

No, I like it. Spinning the record at this moment, too.

Oh, ok. As usually I must have been putting too much emphasis on the ‘ASS’. :?

Anyways, Now Playing:

I feel this one is under appreciated when it comes to their softening period prior to Anneke van Giersbergen leaving. People tend to talk about How To Measure A Planet or Souvenirs as being the pinnacle of their ‘prog’ (I use that term loosely) era, but this does just as good a job. Personally I still prefer Mandylion and Nighttime Birds - just more my taste.
