^^Revisited it just recently. Good album. Can't believe it is already 2 years old though!

N.P Pantera Reinventing The Steel (assorted 2020 tracks online). Date's remix hits harder than the original mix, which was rather flat. Makes the songs more enjoyable to me.

I've had a listen to those Pantera remixes as well. They definitely have a bit more life to them. It will be interesting to hear more of them. I think engineer's only work of note was all with the Abbott's (who also are credited) on this, Damageplan, and Hellyeah, so I think the fresh ears of Date definitely have helped.

Opeth - Sorceress

I think this album is quite solid (other than the mastering job which has squished some of the life out of the mix). Though it seems the preferred by many fans, I found the preceding album to be a bit meandering (although less so than Heritage) and flat. Pale Communion is probably the closest they gotten to Damnation, but I feel they settle into a groove stylistically with this one, like they finally figured out what they want the "prog rock" version of the band to be (for better or for worse) and that follows through to the last album.

Just read Halford's autobiography so I'm smashing the Priest catalogue in order. Just reached the very disappointing Point of Entry (3 fists at best)

First ever death metal album I bought with my own money...on original cassette for old school points...

Liege Lord - Master Control (1988)

The question is why they didn't use him originally when he had produced their previous 4 albums and knew their sound inside out. If they went for a producer with a specific sound (e.g Robinson), then it would have made sense, but RTS sounds similar to TGST only with far less balls and punch. Either they fell out with Date or wanted to control it all themselves. Or he was busy with Deftones and they didn't want to wait.

Continuing to go back through the Coroner catalogue. I'm always a off balance of what to make of this release - part of me really loves how they changed it up, became more textural and created spacey atmosphere, whilst another part wonders if all it really works (particularly the vocals, and the swathes of effects they thrown over them). I like the fact that they tried it anyway.

Plenty of melodic doom/death metal bands were inspired by these guys but failed to deliver the same gloomy magic. The perfect soundtrack for the autumn days!
