I've got a feeling that the new Blade Runner is this year's Fury Road. Hyped to buggery and ultimately an empty letdown. I don't like that director much anyway.

Truth be told, I even think the original is overrated, as good as it is.

The univsrse is expanded brilliantly, the visuals are stunning, the story still contains the right amount of ambiguity, and it's very carefully paced.

It's also the first film with Ryan Gosling I've managed to not only sit through, but actually enjoy.

I don't think I've seen him in many films. Drive, The Ides Of March and Only God Forgives, that's about it. Enjoyed the first two, hated the third (though it looked great).

Blade Runner 2049. : Incredible, a huge, grandiose utterly SCI FI film, I've never been a big fan of gosling or Leto but both are perfect here. Honestly I don't have the words to convey how genuinely surprised and blown away I am by it. I saw it Thursday, it's 3.29am Saturday morning and I'm awake thinking about it, so that says a lot. The original is one of my favourite films, this is worthy to bear the name.

Riding High (1981)
Slight spoiler alert!

Basically an excuse to hook together a number of Eddie Kidd motorbike jumps, footage of Eddie Kidd riding bikes, and a couple of comedy turns among an implausible story with more holes in it than a sieve. The jump at the end over an 80 feet gap in a disused viaduct across the Blackwater River is a fucking ripper!

Kidd can't act for shit, but it doesn't really matter. Irene Handl, playing his Granny hams it up for all she's worth. A young Lynda Bellingham is wasted as Miss Mott. Some of the supporting characters aren't bad, like Dorking (Zoot Money), Astro (Owen Whittaker, who has a funny incident with a truck) and The Halifax Hellcat (Ken Kitson). Otherwise, Marvin Ravensdorf (Murray Salem) would probably be called borderline racist today with his portrayal of a money-grabbing Jewish promoter, Judas S. Chariot (Bill Mitchell) is a bit cliched as a washed-out drunk former stuntman a la Evel Knievel, and Zoro (Marella Oppenheim) has a nice ass but is a wooden character.

The soundtrack isn't bad, featuring mostly late-70s/early-80s soft rock/synth pop, along with Eddie Kidd's anything-but-metal rendition of "Heavy Metal".

Overall, silly escapist fun. I had the book of this movie when I was a kid, and my brothers and I read it repeatedly 'til it died. A case of the book being better than the movie if ever there was one.

The first film of its type, 1972's Deep River Savages somehow became the blueprint for the entire Italian/American cannibal genre of the 1970's/'80s by lifting its plot directly from Richard Harris western, 'A Man Called Horse'.

Working in Thailand, British photo journalist, John Bradley (played by the not even remotely British Ivan Rassimov), spends the first ten minutes of the film watching a boxing match, boring his girlfriend, and accidentally stabbing a man in a bar. Unfazed by his little murder, he goes back to his day job, hiring a canoe and a guide, and heads downriver to take some photos. His guide soon becomes a little nervous, and before you can say "hey, isn't this cannibal country?", he receives an arrow in the neck, and Bradley is captured by a tribe of cannibals.

Attracting the attention of the chief's sexy daughter, she falls in love with the startlingly blonde male prisoner and tells her father to spare his life. Discovering the tribe are at war with another, much more primitive and violent, tribe, Bradley (after a couple of failed escapes) decides to help with their fight. Firstly, however, he has to endure a series of rituals, which not only gets him into the chief's good books but under the daughter's skimpy loincloth too.

Considering the obvious budgetary restraints, although DRS isn't a great film by any stretch, it does actually hang together pretty well. Unfortunately, not an awful lot actually happens. What we get are a few moments of gore stitched between animal deaths, sex, tribal rituals, and plenty of naked cavorting among the bullrushes.

The animal deaths, as ever, are all utterly pointless and not nice at all to watch. A goat gets its throat cut, a crocodile is gutted while still alive, and many other nice ickle animals get the chop. The tribal rituals go from the bizarre (bamboo head cage) to the amusing (men put an arm through a hole in a hut to fondle the Chief's daughter sitting on the other side who then chooses her husband based on how much she likes her boobies and other parts being touched by them), but overall it's just fairly forgettable schlock. Luckily, director Umberto Lenzi persisted with the genre, eventually giving us 1981's notorious Cannibal Ferox.

The second of Italian director Umberto Lenzi's trio of cannibal films, Eaten Alive is like watching one of those cheaply thrown together clip show episodes of Friends. There's a basic story (a woman searches for her sister in a cheesy re-telling of the Jonestown Massacre) but most of the final product is made up of scenes lifted directly from other sources, in this case Mountain of the Cannibal God, Man From Deep River, and Jungle Holocaust, with nary a thought for continuity.

Locations and characters change in the blink of an eye as the action is replaced with old footage, but somehow it still manages to make sense. If you haven't seen the other films then you would be none the wiser, and I suppose that's actually quite impressive in its own cheapskate, time-saving way. Another good thing about the film is that no animals were harmed this time, as all the “natural deaths” are swiped from other films. Among the blatant thievery are also bits and pieces (some of the New York shots and the doomy cannibal theme) which Lenzi would nab for the following year's infamous Cannibal Ferox.

If Eaten Alive has one clear message, it's that it's perfectly fine to punch women in the face, a) to stop them from seeing something, and b) just because you want to.
Also, women will absolutely have sex with someone they don't like if they think they're going to be killed soon. And then immediately fall in love with them afterwards.
1980 was great.

Just saw it and......you're almost there.

Have you seen Artificial Intelligence? If so, Blade Runner 2049 is a noisier, more violent and more "adult" version of that film. It even has some of the same themes here and there and eerily similar visual aesthetic.

It's not a "bad" film though, tbh.

The two friends I saw it with thought it was something of a let down.

When he wasn't producing softcore porn flicks, Italian director Joe D'Amato would often be found lurking around the horror genre, or as in this case, trying to combine both. Responsible for one of the most notorious “video nasties” of the 1980s - Anthropophagous: The Beast - there was nothing D'Amato liked more than serving up a scene of extreme gore followed by some soft focus sexy time.

Unfortunately, with Papaya, he must have got so carried away with filming all the sexy stuff that he forgot to include almost any flesh chomping, so aside from one scene where a man gets his dinkytiddler bitten off (but not actually eaten), some guts being pulled out of a dead animal, and a ritual human sacrifice, it's pretty much just sexploitation hidden inside a cannibal movie wrapping.

The story, what there is, is about a Caribbean island queen who, with the help of her subjects, kill a team of geologists who want to perform atomic research on her island. But seeing as most of the film is taken up with a menage-a-trois, a lesbian scene, and someone having tropical fruit rubbed all over his man banana, there's not really much time for anything else. However, seeing as D'Amato always seemed to have a knack for turning sleaze into something well photographed and respectably cinematic, it's not actually a complete waste of time.
Plus, you know. Tits and everything.

The best 90's erotic thriller after Basic Instinct. I'm honestly convinced that this film was a private joke that only the director and perhaps Willis were in on. The plot is ridiculous, the dialogue is beyond purple, and the psycho-sexual aspects are so on the nose that the film makers couldn't have possibly been unaware of its silliness.

It's such an aggressively moronic movie on all levels ranging from the loud scenery chewing performances from a talented cast of character actors to the sexual metaphors, to the steamy sex scenes (located in pools, showers and on tables and benches, often in one extended sequence) to the cheesy quasi-softcore music. Even the formal choices are over the top at times, especially the use of mirrors, the crude close ups of blatantly symbolic objects, and the way characters are isolated from each other in the frame in a sub-Hitchcockian fashion.

Willis and March definitely have chemistry, even though she looks like a child next to him (no way could this film be made in Hollywood's current climate). Her performance is terrible but endearing, mostly because of her cute smile and sexy girly-girl demeanor. Willis doesn't seem particularly invested in his role as the psychologist inevitably taken in by March's obvious charms. He is badly miscast, but he makes it work mostly by playing a slightly more dour version of his usual self.

Rating this film is pointless. I could give it a 2/10 or a 7/10 depending on my mood. For sheer sleazy entertainment value I'd give it a very high score. As a film judged by conventional standards, it doesn't measure up.

Moving away from the cannibal films of the last few days, I thought I'd step into shuffling undead territory this time. So, with a title that could not be any more perfect for the video rental shelves of the 1980s if it tried, it was all rather disappointing to discover that Zombie Holocaust turned out to basically be yet another bloody cannibal film.

A mish-mash of three main ideas, there's a cannibal plot, a story about a mad doctor (hence the alternative "Dr Butcher, M.D." title), and some zombies. These zombies, however, unlike most of their video nasty counterparts, don't actually appear to consume human flesh, owing more to the zombies of Haitian folklore rather than to Romero and Fulci's people eaters.

So, with a story that begins with body parts being sawn off dead bodies in a hospital, we end up with ritual sacrifice, cannibals, zombies who save humans by going "Aaaahhhhhh", and lots and lots of lovely gratuitous female nudity.

Confusingly released in some countries as "Zombi 3", Zombie Holocaust is not even slightly related to Lucio Fulci's "Zombie Flesh Eaters" (which itself was falsely marketed as a sequel to George A Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" in some quarters), but it does feature Ian McCulloch again, and bizarrely, much of it was shot using the exact same locations.

The most confusing thing about Zombie Holocaust though is how a film which features mad doctors, cannibals, zombies, naked female sacrifice, nude female body painting, and an endless supply of tits could end up being quite so boring.

Every so often, a film comes along which genuinely makes you stupider for having seen it. Frozen Scream is one of those films.

A cop tries to solve a case involving a mad scientist, an immortality drug and frozen zombies wearing monks robes. Directed by Frank Roach, whose only other movie was '80s biker revenge movie Nomad Riders, and produced by lead actress, Renee Harmon, you get an idea of what you're in for when you discover both were community college acting instructors, and the cast and crew were their students.

However, even the worst films have their redeeming qualities, and in this case it's the brilliantly arbitrary narration. As characters speak to each other, it seems that even the director got bored or confused by the dialogue, so added a Film Noir cop voiceover which almost entirely obliterates everything else. Actors continue to say their lines but you just can't hear them for badly written and appallingly performed Sam Spade style exposition booming out over the soundtrack.

Edited by a maniac with garden shears and brown packing tape, and including the exact same music score as used in equally dreadful slasher film, Don't Go in the Woods, Frozen Scream is the retarded, incestuously conceived offspring of a cast and crew with the combined talent of a dented tin of spaghetti hoops. A baffling and agonising experience from beginning to end, I can only assume it's because of the torture inflicted upon the viewer that it was added to the Video Nasties list in the 1980s.

A cheap, generic, and massively derivative stalk and slash, the only interesting things to note of Twisted Nightmare's production is that, such was the distributor's confidence in their product, it was held back for direct to video release until 1987 even during a time when slasher films were guaranteed a video audience, and that it happened to use the same shooting location as Friday the 13th Part III/The Zero Boys.

A group of about fifteen teenagers, some of them with a dark secret, get invited to spend the weekend together in the countryside, but get knocked off in a variety of cheap, and often off-screen ways. Story threads go nowhere, the plot is almost non-existent, and the acting is unfailingly terrible.

With such a large group of kids to hack and strangle his way through, the murderer has to start work fairly early in the film, but the sequences feature virtually no suspense and soon just become boring and yawningly repetitive. Some of the actresses expressions are hilarious, and most of the male actors look like their regular day job is porn. There is, however, a decent burn sequence (even though you can clearly see the stuntman's fireproof clothes and helmet), a healthy amount of naked female flesh to take your mind away from the otherwise interminably predictable proceedings, and the use of slow motion (both sound and visual) can often be highly entertaining for all the wrong reasons.

THE BABYSITTER
(2017)

Not the 1995 Alicia Silverstone straight to video nonsense, but a Netflix own production directed by McG (Terminator Salvation, Charlie's Angels).

A hot blonde teenager comes to look after a ten year old boy while his parents are away. The boy's neighbour, a girl who lives across the street, tells him that after kids are sound asleep, the babysitters always invite their friends over for late night sex orgies. So, pretending to be asleep, he gets up in the middle of the night when he hears the doorbell ring. Sure enough, the babysitter has invited a load of friends over for a game of spin the bottle. However, things take a sudden, and very bloody, left turn, and before you know it the kid is fighting for his life.

As entertaining as it is joyfully predictable, half the fun of The Babysitter is watching how everything gets deliberately and methodically set up in the first half of the film and pays off during the second. The balancing act between laughs and scares definitely leans heavily towards the former, but there are quite a few suspenseful moments scattered here and there, and the blood rarely stops spurting. Imagine if Eli Roth had directed Home Alone, and you'd be in the right ball park. The acting is decent, the characters are likeable and funny, and there are some genuinely witty lines scattered liberally across the ninety minute running time. My only (slight) criticism would be that Ken (Eastbound and Down) Marino was a little underused.
