Post Re: Film Thread VI
Watched the new Star Wars film at cinema yesterday. A real mixed bag of good scenes and some comical ludicrous scenes. The entire film seems like a rushed cobbled together rehash of ideas from the original trilogy. I've finally come to the realisation that the magic of the original trilogy is dead and buried.

Hostiles

Well shot, well cast. Grim as fook and suited Bale to a t as the haunted main protagonist.

^^Bloody hell!!

This video is funny, although it contains spoilers. Reviews every Hellraiser film. I stopped after the 6th one but don't care that he ruins the 'surprises' because they look terrible anyway.

I've seen the first three and the one set on a space station. I doubt I need to see any more than that.

You don't.

In a nutshell: In order to keep the rights to the Hellraiser franchise, Dimension Films started shoe-horning Pinhead into any shit horror movie they had lying around and passing it off as a Hellraiser sequel. The sixth one was ok, and at least they made an effort by getting Kirsty Cotton back for that one, but the rest really were fucking shit. The ninth one was particularly awful as they recast Pinhead so instead of Doug Bradley looking formidable, they got some cunt who looked like a fat Goth.

which is silly because the films don't make much money, especially in their current guise. Their only hope is in Barker's reboot but they keep blocking it.

Hopefully the situation might change under new ownership. The Weinstein's are done.

Recently did A Zed & Two Noughts which I think I really liked. I wasn't sure at first, as it seemed pretty out there, but the more I think about it, the more it's growing on me. And I basically haven't been able to stop thinking about it since watching which is usually a good sign. - 4 fists.

Also did The Mother of Tears which is the third part of a trilogy of Argento films along with Suspiria and Inferno. It really bad. Like, actually made me slightly angry that I'd just sat through it bad. It absolutely expositions the shit out of any suspense or mystery, and relies far too heavily of deus ex machina to move it along. It's really put me off doing his more recent films as they seem to have an even worse reputation. - 1 (limp) fist

Zoo gets worse the more you see it but it's pretty good. He refined that style on Drowning By Numbers.

Mother of Tears is shit, but it isn't the worst contemporary Argento film. His films aren't worth bothering with after the late 80's.

Its the only other post 80's film of his I've done; but I quite enjoyed The Stendhal Syndrome. Infact I'd probably put it above Four Flies and Cat O'Ninetails from his earlier work.

I recall it having a good idea that was quite poorly executed.

Haven't seen it in almost 20 years though.

I prefer Bava to Argento nowadays anyway. Argento is flashier but Bava was more elegant. Argento just thought in terms of set pieces.

Having said that, I love Suspiria and admire Tenebre and Inferno

I'm guessing Mario?
I've only done Blood and Black Lace, but my mate got me Bay of Blood for Christmas. I also stocked up 6 Lamberto Bava films recently too, but I've only done Demons out of all of them. I also seem to have ended up picking up a good few of Sergio Martino's films too.

I think Deep Red is my favourite Argento. I like Suspiria, but I generally prefer the more traditional murder mystery giallo films like Tenebrae, Crystal Plumage etc. I also think I probably prefer Inferno to Suspiria. The colours and lightning all just seemed that bit more refined.

Inferno doesnt hang together like Suspiria to me but it is very good. The lighting is very much like Bava though.

Deep Red focuses too much on plot which I don't believe is Argento's strength. I also started to find Goblin's score a bit obtrusive on repeated viewings

Lamberto is crap compared to his dad but he had his moments.

Prefer the original Pennywise to the remake version.

Hopefully it'll get a release over here. When that came out, a friend of mine recorded the whole film onto a cassette, it was played A LOT in that flat (I was the only non-stoner in the place). Went down well though.

My only problem is its length. The Weinstein's were correct: it could have lost 10 or so mins.

Blade Runner 2049: OK but ultimately a bit bland. As a visual experience, it is like The Force Awakens: a complete fascimile. The images just aren't as rich or memorable. There are no great shots, just good ones. It has a uniformally bland and clinically impressive look that takes zero risks.

I'd almost go as far to say that it's a sequel based on a profound misunderstanding of the original, or at least an attempt to make it more palatable for conservative viewers.. Blade Runner didnt have enough story, so lets have more story. There was not enough character development either so let's add that, and let's make us care a lot about the characters too because you know, that's what a good film does.

Easily one of the most overrated films in recent times and I regret buying it.

3/5 at best and that might be generous.

In the last few weeks I've done

Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
Steamboat Bill, Jr.
Safety Last!
The Great Dictator
Sherlock, Jr.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Hostiles
All the Money in the World
Good Night, Nurse!
The Cook

Out of all the older comedies I did Saftey Last was by far my favourite.
The two Keaton films both had incredible moments, but were really inconsistent.
The two Fatty Arbuckle films I did basically because they turn 100 years old this year.
