Post Hawkwind Survivor: Round One
No, only kidding.

I'm finally making an effort to listen to the rest of the their back catalogue. I've had the mighty Chronicle of the Black Sword for some years now thanks to the Michael Moorcock connection, but this is the first time I've dived into the rest of their stuff beyond the obvious 'Silver Machine' and 'Levitation' from a hundred early nineties compilation albums, and the few songs that Lemmy took with him over to Motörhead. Any of you lot got any special favourite moments from their (absurdly lengthy) back catalogue that you'd care to draw my attention to?

My uncle once gave me Choose Your Masques as a christmas present, so I've always had a soft spot for that one. I don't think it's particularly well thought of by fans, though.

Basically, every album from the debut in 1970 to Chronicles Of The Black Sword in 1985 is awesome.

Haven't heard every last one, but this is the only one I've ever really got into. I like it alot. I doubt it's what you'll be expecting though Shallow, it's sort of drawn out synthy sort of jams. Very spacey.

Surely not?

Apart from the usual culprits, two less obvious recommendations are last year's Blood Of The Earth and Quark Strangeness and Charm. Both really good. Robert Calvert on QS&C makes it imo.

I disagree, Space Ritual is the finest thing they ever did.

Even if they've got live spoken-word performances by Michael Moorcock and are by far the best thing the band have ever done?

And when the cover art is as awesome as this.

Actually, might have to resort to judging this on packaging, In which case, Space Ritual gets first place, then it's Hall of The Mountain Grill.

I'm not normally one for live albums either, to be honest, but Space Ritual is fucking immense. The best versions of those songs, played by a brilliant line-up who are scarily tight for people who've taken THAT MANY drugs and fantastic spoken-word segues from Moorcock. At the expense of sounding like a huge cock (again), it sounds less like a live rock album and more like a field recording of some mad ecstatic ritual with chanting and hookers. Definitely the exact opposite of the "fuck yeah! This next one goes out to all the crazy motherfuckers out there - I WANT TO HEAR YOU SCREAM!" experience that I think Shallow imagines when he hears "live album". And also he hates black people.

Yay, now he doesn't have to make up that people are calling him a racist!!

Space Ritual is a fantastic album and in some respects it's the only Hawkwind album you really need. It's them at their best in their natural environment.

Live albums can sometimes be a bit of a cash in but Space Ritual, All Those Wasted Years by Hanoi Rocks and Live After Death are just three that break that 'rule'. SR is something worthwhile in it's own right.

You should have. I'm booking a date at The Star for the Rapefight/Enos/Fun hag tour in March. I'm thinking of taking a lighting rig and doing 'the full Hawkwind' at as many shows as possible.

He could do the spoken word bits as some sort of free form beat poetry.
